Japanese Day

Prep

School has been full of fun for the Preps recently! We have loved the opportunity to dress up and celebrate our love for books, Japanese culture, and our passion for footy! In the classroom, students have been working very hard on their non-fiction books and are becoming problem solving experts in maths!

Year 1

The Year 1 students had an incredible time participating in the Japanese Day at school this week. Some of the tasks included water colour painting and dancing. They also loved watching the professional drummers in the afternoon. What a great day!

Year 2

It’s impossible to choose a highlight from the last fortnight! The celebrations began with a glorious week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. Next, we enjoyed Japanese Day activities such as Chopsticks competitions and making Koi fish and lanterns and playing traditional Japanese games. Footy Day followed quickly, and we wore our favourite footy colours and raised money for charity. The Year 6s played footy against the teachers and sadly won but it was a closely contested match. Thanks to Miss Robertson for being our secret lethal weapon. Miss Dunn and Ms Kearton represented the Year 2s and it was fun barracking for them. We managed to keep on track with our learning, exploring arrays in Maths and writing persuasive essays. Our Design and Technology Inquiry projects have taken over the classrooms with amazing games being created to share each other and the Preps in the final week. We’re going to go ‘full throttle’ until the end of term!

Year 3

Kon'nichiwa families and friends of Beaumaris Primary School,

This week in Year 3 has been especially exciting! On Tuesday the 29th of August, the whole school celebrated Japanese Day. Staff and students came to school dressed in Japanese-themed costumes, such as in kimonos, Pikachu onesies, Japanese flags, karate and ninja outfits as well as sushi! To begin our morning, the whole school was involved in a Japanese assembly, where we were treated to a variety of student performances. Year 3 sung a traditional Japanese song called 'Kutsu Ga Naru' and danced with Japanese castanets. The students had been rehearsing their song and dance for many weeks and should be so proud of their performance at our Japanese assembly...congratulations! After recess and lunch, the Year 3 students participated in different Japanese activities, including origami, Japanese calligraphy (Shodo) and drumming. It was so much fun and enjoyed by students and teachers alike! To conclude our BPS Japanese Day, the whole school gathered together once more to experience a Taiko drumming demonstration. Arigato to Gall Sensei and Wilson Sensei for all of your hard work in making this year's Japanese Day a great success!

Sayonara!

The Year 3 Team.

Year 4

The Year 4s have really loved participating in all of the dress up days over the past few weeks and completing a variety of activities. A highlight from Japanese Day was definitely creating sumo wrestlers with origami and having competitions. The students have also been working really hard on their inquiry projects and have loved being creative with their designs in order to show how the Earth's surface has changed over time due to human activity or natural processes. They can't wait to present them to their class and families in Week 10!

Year 5

Upstanders

On Monday 21st August, the Year 5 Upstanders went on an excursion to the Brighton Town Hall. We did lots of fun activities like learning hip hop dances. Everyone had an amazing time! To start the day off, Zoe Daniels came and did a speech for us before we got started with the activities and hip hop dancing. We looked at sculptures in the gallery that Anne Ross made and shared our thoughts about them with our group. We played some games and looked at different scenarios and shared what we would do in the situation. We also created art with Noni. We started off with dots on the page and then we connected them with markers pencils or crayons to create random drawings of what we saw. Not only did we do all these fun things, but we met friends from other schools.

By some of your Upstanders; Brinley W from 5R, Ita W from 5J and Annabel G from 5M.

Book Week

The students put a lot of effort into creating fantastic costumes for Book Week this year.

  • For Book Week I dressed up as the ‘Runaway Pumpkin’. I created my costume out of paper and cut and pasted each piece together. I did lots of research and changed my ideas many times. - Isabella AS
  • For Book Week we dressed up as Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa because we like the Roald Dahl books and have also watched the movie. - Quinny & Nathan
  • We dressed up as Pow Pow Pig. It was fun to make and took a few weeks. We made the pigs out of cardboard and painted them pink. We also made the brooms out of cardboard, the white bristles at the end were cut and folded white paper.  - Gus & Ethan K

Japanese Day

On Tuesday 29th August we celebrated Japanese day at BPS. We started our day with an assembly and parade. Students then participated in the following activities; badminton, table tennis, origami and cherry blossom artworks.

Student highlights:

  • I enjoyed making origami, I made a chatterbox and a butterfly. – Michaela O
  • My highlight was getting dressed up for Japanese Day. – Chloe C
  • I enjoyed listening to the drumming at assembly as I enjoy listening to music. – Emma L

Year 6

Yesterday we celebrated our annual footy day and fathers/special friend’s day. We finished the morning with the Year 6 vs. teachers football match. We were very lucky to have a dad, who is also an official AFL umpire, adjudicate the game. The students managed to steal the win with a 2 goal lead. Well done to all!
