Our theme for this school year is 'Joy'. Joy comes from deep within us and we look for moments of joy in each day. We will have lots of conversations at school about moments of joy, and encourage you to have chats at home too to identify what brings us joy in each day.
Our teachers work hard to integrate our Religious Education (RE) and Inquiry topics where possible. By working under one topic/theme in both areas, we establish stronger connections and deeper learning for the students. A key aspect of curriculum design in a Catholic school is to challenge learners to explore and consider deep questions, and big ideas.
An inquiry-based approach to learning invites student voice in shaping their curriculum. Learning is driven by the areas of needs, interests and wonderings of the students in that class and grade level. We will continue our work this year with Kate Korber from The Inquiry Project to further develop our work in this area.
For 2024, the term topic will be as follows:
Term 1 - Responsibility
RE - Morality and Justice
Inquiry - SWELL and Civics & Citizenship
Term 2 - Creation is All Around Us
RE - God, Religion and Life
Inquiry - Earth and Space Sciences
Term 3 - Our Stories
RE - Scripture and Jesus
Inquiry - History
Term 4 - Journeys
RE - Scripture and Jesus
Inquiry - Geography
The theme of responsibility can be discussed at different levels from Prep - Grade 6. For our new Prep students, they are learning how to be responsible for their own belongings and actions, and how they can work together safely and happily. As we progress towards to the older year levels, teachers will incorporate the Civics and Citizenship curriculum and how we work together to become good global citizens.
This theme lends itself well to our SWELL (Student Wellbeing Engagement and Love for Learning) Term. As we settle into a new school year, we learn to make new friends, how to work in a new class environment and what we need to do for each other to feel safe and happy at school.
Next Tuesday 13 February is Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is a Christian festival celebrated in many countries across the world. It falls on the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent - a period of around six weeks leading up to Easter.
Traditionally during Lent, Christians would give up rich, tasty foods such as butter, eggs, sugar and fat. Shrove Tuesday was the last change to eat them - what better way to do so than with delicious pancakes!
We thank our wonderful Parents & Friends for organising pancakes for each student on this day.
Next Wednesday 14 February is Ash Wednesday and it marks the beginning of Lent. We call it Ash Wednesday because many Christians around the world receive a cross of ashes on their foreheads. This cross of ashes tells friends and neighbours that we are not perfect, and that we know we are not perfect. With God's help we can try to reach out to others with more love and kindness, especially in our own families, our school and Parish community. We think about how we can be better people.
Students Grade 1-6 will attend Mass on Wednesday at 9:15am, families and friends are welcome to attend and sit with your child/ren.
The season of Lent begins next week with Ash Wednesday. Lent is the period of about six weeks before Easter. It is a time in which we are quiet and thoughtful, preparing for Easter. During Lent, we are invited to pray, show kindness to our loved ones, help those in need, or give up something that is special to us.
Students will participate in Lenten prayer services each week during whole school and level assemblies.
