The leap of faith we take by entering any contest exposes us to uncertainty. Depending on several factors - including the setting and the level of competition - the outcome may not be as simple as win, lose or draw.
In pre-race or half-time addresses, coaches often impart wisdom, emphasise phrases such as "you determine the outcome" or "we will get the result we deserve".
The variables in any school-age contest are too numerous to contemplate. In my experience, there is no great secret to success or winning.
When we win, it is the result of hard work and perseverance to overcome both ourselves and our opposition. Conversely, defeat is because our opposition performed better on the day.
As competitors, we willingly take a chance by stepping into the arena - whether it be a court, field, boat, pool, or the stage or lectern. As members of a learning community engaged in educating and building character, we must accept the result and congratulate the opposition. Then, the hard work begins again.
How we respond to adversity, loss, subpar outcomes, or disappointment is the greatest demonstration of character. The ability to navigate through setbacks becomes a testament to our resilience. When victory is achieved, we face another character test; respecting our opponent, and upholding the values of our school.
In the upcoming weekend, regardless of the outcome - whether it be victory, defeat, or a draw - I trust all Clayfield College students will confront the challenges that the contest presents and continue to evolve and grow in character as a result, strengthened by the unwavering support of their parents, coaches and staff.
Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to participate in representative sports at district, regional, and state levels for a variety of activities.
If you are interested in nominating for trial selections, please view the relevant information via the College App > Sport > Secondary/Primary > Representative Sport.
All parents and students are encouraged to navigate this page, including the Representative Sport Overview, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the process.
The trial calendar is busy, and students are encouraged to pay careful attention to the Representative Sport page on the College App for trial notices. Nominations for all representative sport trials must be received before the respective deadlines.

Aurora Saffrey's Remarkable Achievement: Dual National Titles
In a dazzling display of grace, skill and determination, Aurora Saffrey emerged victorious on the grand stage of the BJP School of Physical Culture Senior National Finals. Held in the prestigious Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on 27 November 2023, this annual event gathered talented young women from all corners of Australia, each vying for the converted title of "Senior Grand Champion" in the 2023 National Finals. Aurora continued her extraordinary journey by claiming a second national title at the prestigious APDA Nationals. Held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Darling Harbour, this event marked the pinnacle of the annual Physical Culture calendar, bringing together elite competitors from across the country to showcase their prowess in contemporary dance and fitness.
Aurora's journey to dual national titles began with an unwavering commitment to the art of physical culture and dance. The competition, renowned for its stringent standards and intense competition, provided the perfect platform for Aurora to showcase her exceptional talent, captivating both judges and spectators alike.
Reflecting on her remarkable journey, Aurora graciously shared some insights into her experience in the world of physical culture and dance. With humility and gratitude, she expressed the joy and challenges that have shaped her path to success.
"On Monday 27 November, I had the privilege of being able to dance on one of Australia's most prestigious stages at the Sydney Opera House. Ever since the age of six, it's been an ultimate goal of mine to dance there, and in my first eligible year of being able to qualify to compete, I came home with the title of 2023 15 years National Champion. It was an incredible experience after 10 years of dedication, patience, and hard work. It was such a special night which I'll always be grateful for and will never forget.
The following weekend on 3 December at the ICC Syndey the APDA Dance Association also held its National Championship Finals. Coming off a high from the previous weekend, all I wanted to achieve was a good performance. That night I came home with the title of 2023 15 years APDA National Champion.
Both nights were such a memorable experience, getting support from teammates, friends and family and being able to live in what I've been dreaming of since I was young."
