Space School

Over the Summer holidays, Clayfield College students attended the Space Academy at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville Alabama and successfully won the Commander’s Cup Award for their Camp.

The Space Camp consisted of 12 teams of 12-14 children, and each team was given the opportunity to demonstrate their individual and combined skills in several engineering and simulated space mission challenges.  During the week, the Space Camp staff awarded points to each team for completing the task and for the level of professionalism, communication, and cohesion they demonstrated while doing it.

The team with the highest score at the end of the week is awarded the Space Academy Commander’s Cup, and in this case it was awarded to Team Atlas – the team that contained the participating Clayfield College students:

  • Evie Williamson
  • Megan Groundwater
  • Sarah Grima
  • DoHee Lee
  • Rhea Suchak
  • Evelyn Wells

Evie Williamson, Year 9

Space Camp was the most adventurous and interesting experience in my life so far. Having my friends Rhea, DoHee, Sara and Megan there made the trip so much more enjoyable and meeting everyone and bonding with all the boys and girls from schools all over Australia was incredible. Already, some of the best friends I have met are from Space Camp. I bonded very well with my existing friends, and now we share inside jokes and memories which bring us closer and make us more connected.

In Huntsville, we learnt how to be independent everyday and travel to presentations and activities. Having Ava, a past student at Clayfield, really helped us. Other than helping us out, we could joke around and have fun together. Caitlin, our group manager, was the best. She'd always help us, without boring us half to death. Having the amount of freedom we had in Hunstville made it much more enjoyable as we could talk for hours with the other girls in our room.

In Houston, having our own hotel rooms was so much fun. Even though we weren't supposed to, Rhea, Dohee and I would go up to Floor 11 and we would play "Silent Uno"; it wasn't very silent though. Houston was very fun as the activities were so interesting, we got to experience American culture, eat decent food, had lots of fun, lost our voices singing to Justin Bieber and getting to step outside our comfort zone.

If I could do it again, I wouldn’t think twice. I couldn’t stop crying as we said our farewells to my friends and teachers. I have made connections I will never lose. Space Camp was the best experience of my life.
