School News

Welcome to our 2024 Parents

Welcome to our Foundation 2024 families who will be receiving our school newsletter for the first time!

Lisa Newbury, our Early Years Coordinator, has been busy visiting students at their preschools, early learning centres and childcare centres and we held a Foundation 2024 Information Night last Wednesday. We are looking forward to welcoming students for their first transition morning next Thursday 3rd November.

School Values Awards

Each week we present School Value Awards for students who have upheld or demonstrated one of our Pilgrim values: Belong, Explore, Flourish, Serve. The students are presented with their award at our weekly Worships.

Thank you Karen Hillier

Staff held a special lunch this week to honour Karen Hillier and her work at Pilgrim School. Many of you will remember Karen and her many years of service in our Front Office and involvement in our school community for 21 years since her eldest son started at Pilgrim. Karen continues to recover from her experience with leukaemia and we praise God for the healing in her body as she has been free of leukaemia for the last 12 months.  During lunch, we reflected on Karen's generous, caring and encouraging nature and the way she always did whatever she could to serve students, staff and families in our school community.

Australia - Indonesian Bridge Program

We are very excited that Pilgrim is one of 10 schools chosen from around Australia to be part of this year’s Australia - Indonesian Bridge Program. We have been paired with SD Kowang (Kowang Primary School) in Yogyakarta.

In Week 5, two teachers from SD Kowang - Bu Pritta and Bu Annisa, will be visiting Pilgrim for a week, spending time in our Indonesian lessons and in classrooms sharing about Indonesian life and culture and learning about Australia. This will form the foundation for an ongoing partnership between Pilgrim School and SD Kowang, which will provide many opportunities for our students to connect with Indonesia and to use the Indonesian language that they learn at school.

Bu Tretheway and Mrs Carpenter have been getting to know Bu Pritta and Bu Annisa in preparation for their visit. Bu Pritta teaches Year 6 and is married with two children. Bu Annisa teaches Year 5 and is also married with a young son. She really enjoys music and singing and is looking forward to being able to teach our students a traditional Indonesian song.

Aria Kicking Goals

One of our Year 5 students, Aria, was invited to trial for the girls State Development Squad with Football SA (soccer) in June and, despite recovering from an ankle injury which had her sidelined for 8 weeks, made the squad. This program led to a 3-day carnival between all regions in the October school holidays. Selectors were present to invite people to train on with Football SA through the Summer SAP program.

Aria gained selection for this opportunity too and is looking to gain a spot on the Football SA part time or full time squads in the near future. She also recently trialled for the U12 girls team with her club but instead was offered a playing position in the U13 girls team (playing up an age group).

With training 4/5 days a week and a lot of hard work and dedication, Aria's goal is to make a career from soccer and maybe one day be a Matilda. Congratulations Aria!

Party Invitations

For those families holding a party for your child, invitations should not be handed out at school unless your child's whole class is invited. We recognise there are times only a small number of friends will be invited and we ask you make other arrangements to pass out invitations or email invitations, so that other children do not feel left out and school staff are not involved.

ICAS and AMC Certificates Presentation

During Worship, next Tuesday 31st October; students will be presented with their ICAS Maths and AMC (Australian Maths Competition) Certificates. Worship commences at 9am in the PAC, parents are welcome to attend. Please note our Year 6 students will receive their certificates during Week 4 Assembly.

Medication Plan Changes

We have introduced a change to our Medication Plans which we hope will make things a little easier for families going forward. There are now two versions of our Medication Plan forms:

  1. For Prescription Medication - this is essentially the same as our original Medication Form which requires a doctor to complete the information for all medications that are prescribed by a doctor.
  2. For Over the Counter Medication - this is a new form that can be completed by a Pharmacist for medications that do not require a prescription, eg. some pain killers, hayfever tablets, special creams and ointments.

Thomas Readett Mural

Thomas Readett is an Established Artist and a Ngarrindjeri man who was born and raised on Kaurna Country (Adelaide, SA) where he continues to practice and live. Thomas’ practice spans drawing, painting , street-art, video, music, advocacy and education.

Thomas is completing a mural on the western wall of Pilgrim School based on the ideas and inspiration from a workshop he delivered with our Year 3/4 classes where students were engaged to draw and discuss ideas of what they wanted to see on the school's new mural.

His final design includes an Adelaide Rosella and a Rainbow Lorikeet, two birds native to this region. Students have loved seeing his mural come to life over the past couple of days. It is a stunning addition to our school!

Year 2 Serve Project

For their Serve project, the Year 2 class will be raising money to support Backpacks 4 SA Kids. We will be selling slushies in Week 3 at recess on Wednesday and Friday. The cost will be $2 per slushie. Please note that this will be cash only.

Many thanks,

Belong & Blossom Playgroup Registration

Our Belong & Blossom Playgroup is held on Wednesday and Friday mornings this term. Please use the link below to register your child for Term 4. Families that have attended during Term 3, are also required to please register.

2025 Foundation Enrolments

We are commencing interviews for Foundation 2025. If you have child due to start school in 2025, please click on the Application for Enrolment button and complete the enrolment process. If your child will be 5 years old by 1st May 2025, they can commence in Foundation at the beginning of that year. If your child turns 5 years old between 1st May and 31st October you may wish to consider midyear entry. This has always been an option and now that preschools are able to enrol children from midyear to midyear, it may be an excellent opportunity for your child. Please contact Kristen Heath on 8270 3033 or at heathk@pilgrim.sa.edu.au if you would like to discuss your family's situation.

School Tours

Our next School Tours will be held on Saturday 4th November at 10.00am. If you have friends, family or neighbours interested in seeing Pilgrim School, please encourage them to register for our school tour online at School Tour Bookings or contact the school on 8270 3033.

SunSmart Information

The Cancer Council provides information to families about what it means to be SunSmart. Here is their explanation of how UV is different from heat.

Many people mistakenly believe that they only need sun protection on hot, sunny days. It is UV, not heat, that causes sunburn, skin damage and skin cancer.

UV is not like the sun’s light which we see, or the sun’s warmth (infrared radiation) which we feel. Our senses cannot detect UV so it can be damaging our skin without us knowing, even on cool or cloudy days.

In Term 4, all students are required to wear a hat when they go outside each day, in line with The Cancer Council of SA recommendations. Please refer to the Campus Skin Protection Policy for further details.
