Year 7/8 Australian Rules Football

School Girls Australian Rules Football continues to grow, with the SSATIS competitions this term increasing to separate Year 7 and Year 8 rosters.  Mount Carmel has entered a team in both rosters, being one of five Year 7 teams and one of eight Year 8 teams.  The level of experience within the participating teams is varied, but the enthusiasm for the competition is evident, with players enjoying the social connection as much as the sport itself.

So far, the Year 8 team has secured strong wins against Fahan 66 – 27 and Sacred Heart 72 – 0.   Hopefully they can cover the absence of five players this week, due to the clash with the Year 8 State Netball Championships, and continue their impressive start to the season.

The Year 7 team were rostered the bye in round one, which provided some more time to round up a full team to compete in the newly created Year 7 roster.  SSATIS granted dispensation for some Year 8s to play, and thankfully a team was created.  Their first match against Dominic at Dominic was a tough entry into the competition, but I look forward to seeing the team grow in confidence through the remaining matches.  Thanks to Year 9 students, Emily Butler and Sofia Bowman-Shaw who have taken on the coaching role of this team, with support from Mr Chapman and Dr James.

Primary Touch Football

It’s a great learning experience for our group of touch footballers, participating in the Year 5/6 JSSATIS roster on Tuesday afternoons.   Most of the team are Year 5s and very few have played touch football before.  The initial games have been a challenge, coming up against many more experienced players, but their attitude and teamwork is fantastic.  Thanks to Year 9 students Hannah Mahmoud, Zali Elliott and Esther Dance for taking the team for training at lunch.  Good luck in the remaining matches to the team of Ruby-May Sproule, Leila Griffiths, Olivia Creese, Grace Nosworthy, Lacey Trask, Indi Fraser, Isabella-Rose Williams, Eliza Fleming and Coach Bec O’Halloran.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Sasha Curtayne (Year 4) who recently represented Tasmania at the Sothern Cross Classic Gymnastics competition in Geelong. The Sothern Cross is an underage competition for gymnasts in Level 6 to Future International with gymnasts from Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia competing at this years event.

Sasha is a Level 7 gymnast and placed 4th overall in the Beam.

Also representing Tasmania was Aimee Chen, who is joining the College community in 2024.
