Out and About with the Secondary Classes

Year 10 experience Lawn Bowls

As part of the “Challenge and Adventure” focus area within the HPE curriculum, Year 10 are participating in two “Come and Try” Lawn Bowls sessions at Sandy Bay Bowls Club this term.

The Year 10 “Community and recreational activities” unit aims to expose the students to activities that not only promote physical activity but exist in the community to increase social interaction. Both Year 10 classes attended their first session on Monday October 23 and this provided them with the opportunity to demonstrate how they could transfer and adapt movement strategies to an unfamiliar situation to achieve successful outcomes.

We would like to thank Sandy Bay Bowls club for facilitating these sessions and we look forward to our next sessions during Week 4.

Year 8 STRIVE Camp

On Monday 23 October, the Year 8 students headed off for our 3-day camp at Adventure Bay on Bruny Island. While we were faced with numerous challenges, including a bit of rain and wind, it was an amazing experience and full of many memories that we will all cherish for a long time.

Across the week we were split into four groups for activities. Each posed a different challenge and were designed to provide a well rounded experience. One activity was an Environment and Culture walk, where we learnt about the history and significance of not only Adventure Bay, but Bruny Island as a whole. We learnt about the indigenous culture, the wildlife, and the importance of looking after the environment not just on the island but back home as well.

We also completed the Fluted Cape Walk, where we started by walking along the beach from our campsite before beginning our climb. While the climb was tough, the view at the top certainly made it worth it. After reaching the 270m peak, we descended the track which took us along the cliff-side with some of the most amazing views. The view of the water walking down keeps getting better the further you go. It is so pretty; no words can describe it. It was challenging at times, as it wasn’t the easiest hike. But with the positivity from our fellow students, it was a challenge that we could overcome.

The final activity was based in the water, where we got to swim and go rafting in the stunning waters of Adventure Bay. This was a great bonding experience as we had to work together to successfully stay on the raft (despite some interference from teachers). We had to stack the rafts and then get our entire team on top of them, whilst holding the rafts together and fighting against waves, and for some groups, massive waves.

Most significantly, the camp was an experience where we had to take on a lot of responsibility. We had to pitch our tents, look after our belongings and the surrounding environment. The weather on the final morning certainly made this challenging and a tent may have gone flying but these were all challenges that we worked together to overcome.

There were so many unforgettable moments during our camp. The sound of the waves at night and the sound of rain on the tents make us appreciate our location a little more and just for a few days the many giggles and laughs shared between not just friends but with our teachers means there will be lots of stories shared for a long time to come.
