Level 3

Level 3

It is hard to believe we are over halfway through our last term together for 2023!

3MW wrote magical themed narratives that began with a bold start to hook the reader and lots of description to help readers form a vision in their mind. The rising action kept readers invested to find out if the characters will solve the problem. We worked hard to include a satisfying resolution instead of using ‘to be continued’ or ‘it was only a dream’.

Remembrance Day inspired us to write some short but heartfelt poems and make poppies which we wore at assembly.  3MW continue to enjoy spelling and grammar activities with Jolly Phonics and our spelling grid tasks. The class love a good wordsearch to practice spelling. Aren’t we lucky when the same 4 letters can make 7 different sounds?! Spelling can be understood through tough and thorough thought, though trickier with hiccoughs. Enough of that, here’s some wonderful work samples.

In Reading, we are looking at synonyms and antonyms before we move into finding context clues to work out meanings of words. During our chat about antonyms today, Finn posed the question ‘If flies had no wings, wouldn’t they be called a walk?’ which became an interesting side discussion. Next week we plunge into poetry - diamante, haiku and limericks. Our focus will be to read poems using the intended rhythm, well timed phrasing and exuberant expression!

I continue to be impressed with the success 3MW have made when reading, both in fluency and interest. We had to negotiate the time limit for silent reading as I said we only had time for 15 minutes and 3MW wanted 25. We settled on 20 and everyone read in complete silence – something not often achieved in our classroom! With the wonderful weather upon us earlier in the week we snuck out 10 minutes early for a fun fresh air and sun run around. However, I found a few bookworms ‘getting lost in their book’ in the strangest places!

As we explore “Our Island Home” during Inquiry sessions, students have researched one of the countries that neighbours Australia and are collaborating in pairs to design an interesting PowerPoint using a laptop. Information includes the current population, climate, languages spoken, native flora/fauna, landmarks and importantly, its location compared to Australia. Here is a sneak peek of the researchers at work!

Finally, in Numeracy this week we explored perimeter, area and temperature. Next Wed 22nd Nov all Level 3 are off to the Heathmont Shops for some savvy shopping and money management. We get to practice adding prices and calculating change when buying items (sandwich/roll, snack and fruit) for our picnic lunch. We are looking forward to it 😊
