Level 2

Level 2

It is hard to believe that we are now more than half way through Term 4 and that out sweet Level 2 students will soon be leaving us for Level 3!  This term is certainly flying!

INQUIRY:

Level 2 were so excited to visit the Melbourne Museum last week to support our learning about Australia’s First Nations Peoples and the history of Melbourne. Students loved watching the Dreamtime story of Bunjil, were enthralled by the Indigenous artifacts and were impressed by the sheer size of Phar Lap. Here are 2MY’s favourite memories from our day:

Ruby: I liked the Mini-Model section the best! I loved how you could look in the camera and it looked like real people were in the doll house. I liked the café with the mouldy food too!

Maddie: I loved seeing the big horse. He was even bigger than a polar bear and won every race that he was put in to!

Emily: I loved exploring lots of new things about history, like how many Aboriginal languages we have and exploring the old-fashioned Melbourne house. It was funny when Asha used the fire stick to try and light a fire and when Wyatt pretended to use the outdoor dunny!

Maple: I loved the Mini-Models especially the boats and airplanes. It was cool seeing a model of Captain Cook’s ship The Endeavour. It was cool to see things from Melbourne’s history like the old fashioned movie and the roller-coaster carriage!

Wyatt: I really, really like the mini-model museum because it had a lot of mini models of course. It also had a little TV screen where you could see what everyone else was doing.

Neil: I liked resting and jumping and playing on all of the pillows with my friends.

Viha: I can’t choose a favourite, there were too many favourite things! But probably the Bunjil light show.

Paige: The Mini-Museum was the best bit. It was really funny when I bobbed my head on the glass. Watching an old-fashioned movie in the old-fashioned movie theatre was really fun!

Lincoln: Probably Bunjil the Eagle – the colours were really pretty, and I liked the story it told.

Taran: I loved almost everything! Especially the mechanical section of the Mini-Museum where you could press a button and see how the machines work.

Evie: I really liked the little old cottage, it was interesting to see how people used to live with so many beds in one room.

Heidi: I loved pressing all of the buttons in the First Peoples section and hearing all of the different languages and seeing photos of different places in Australia.

Nanero: The big bark canoe. It was like the bark boat we made at HE Parker.

Callum: I really liked listening to Aboriginal music on the headphones.

Isaac: I liked looking at all of the Indigenous weapons, especially the spears as they had 3 sharp bits instead of 1!

Patrick: I liked looking at the map of the different Indigenous groups and listening to all of the different languages.

Liam: The Aboriginal shields were different to what I had seen before which was surprising and cool.

Asha: I loved the Mini- Museum. It was really fun. I liked where we could sit in the dining room and the camera made it look like we were in the dollhouse!

Lea: I loved playing at the playground at the end with my friends. We played follow the leader.

Ethan: The mini models were the best. I liked the camera that looked at the table. It looked like we were in the doll house.

LITERACY:

Level 2 students have begun investigating how to write for persuasive purposes. We have participated in a series of line debates, explored the power of modal verbs and have ‘put ourselves in others’ shoes’ in an attempt to help strengthen our opinions and arguments. You could support your child’s learning at home by asking them to give you 3 solid reasons to convince you when they are asking to do something! Example: Child: “Can I have ice-cream for dessert?” Parent: “Can you give me 3 good reasons why it is a good idea?”

Students have been practicing their ‘skimming and scanning’ abilities this week in reading. They have been excited to read a series of previous NAPLAN magazines. They have learnt how to identify key words in the question before scanning the text for their key words to help find the answer.

NUMERACY:

This fortnight in Numeracy, Level 2 have been investigating how to find the value of elements within patterns and number sentences. They have worked to create their own number patterns using addition and subtraction and have used their knowledge of number patterns, number lines and 100s charts to help them determine the value of missing elements.
