Level 1

Level 1

Numeracy

Our Level 1 students have been working extremely hard over the past two weeks. Last week we explored directional language where students had to give and follow directions with a classmate. We also looked at positional language where students flipped, slid and rotated the first letter of their first name.

This week, students have been exploring the mass of objects by using their hefting skills to identify heavier and lighter objects. We also created our own scales by using a ruler and eraser to find items of equal weight.

Reading

In reading we have been focusing on finding and searching for information. Students have then used the facts found for their information reports in our writing sessions. They have used a variety of books from the library, laptops where they used the search engine ‘Kiddle’ and fact files to find and search for their information.

Jolly Phonics

Our focus for our Jolly Phonics sounds this week was /ir/ for swirl. We always start off with a whole class brainstorm where we think of as many words that have our focus sound as we can. Students brainstormed their words inside a swirl. Students can then create their spelling words using sensory play items such as salt and rainbow rice trays, playdough, letter stamps, magnetic letters and stencils.

Writing

In writing students have been working on their information reports about sea creatures. Students chose from either a star fish, sea turtle, shark or sea horse. As collaboration as been a focus in Level 1, students researched their chosen sea creature with a partner and discussed the important information needed for their reports. Once the students had gathered all of the notes needed, they presented their information in the form of a poster.

This week, we have also begun writing procedures. Students created a paper lantern to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. They then wrote their procedures on how to create their lantern, making sure to include a title, aim, materials and method. Well done Level 1 students for all the effort you put into your work!
