The focus for Years 1 to 6 is using the design cycle process to solve problems.
Years 1 and 2 have researched synthetic materials and natural materials and will use this information to design and construct parachutes. They will test their parachutes in Week 7.
Years 3 and 4 are using the design cycle process to develop simple Rube Goldberg machines. have researched, designed and constructed Rube Golberg machines.
Year 5 and 6 students have used the design cycle process to meet the design challenge of developing an origami roofing structure that extends and retracts.
Foundation and Year 1
This month, Foundation and Year 1 students explored how certain forces are required to move different objects. Students used their previous learning about 2D and 3D shapes to push, pull, slide, bounce, roll and spin objects around the school. In the upcoming weeks, students will engage in various learning stations and games to further develop their understanding about forces and shapes.
Year 2
The Year 2s explored how sunlight travels to the earth. We learnt about the different layers of the atmosphere. We learnt how humans perceive light and sound and the different parts of our body that are involved in this process.
Year 3
The Year 3 students learnt about the different modes of heat transfer this month. We explored the differences between conduction, convection and radiation and the examples where this transfer occurs in our daily life. We also discovered conductors and insulators of heat and how these play a vital role in everyday cooking.
Year 4
This month, Year 4 students participated in research and experiments to explore where and how people use magnetic forces. Students’ discoveries were recorded in their Science journals and shared with peers. Key examples discovered were compasses, magnets, technological devices like iPads, whiteboard dusters and metal scrap magnets in junkyards. In the upcoming weeks, students will engage in various learning stations, games and experiments to further develop their understanding about contact and non-contact forces and their purposes.
Years 5/6:
This month, Years 5/6s students explored how reflection and refraction of light occurs. Experiments were conducted to help students explain reflection and refraction of light, including using relevant scientific words such as light source, medium, density, incident ray, reflected ray, angle of incident, angle of reflection, and angle of refraction. In the upcoming weeks, students will engage in various learning stations, games and experiments to further develop their understanding about where and how people utilise light for particular purposes.
Foundation - Year 2
Our Foundation - Grade 2 students have been learning about the Fundamental Motor Skill of ‘Kick’. We have been practising the steps that are required to perform the kicking action. The students have been enthusiastic with their learning and what part of our foot we use to kick the ball along the ground or up in the air. The kick is an important skill as children will be using this knowledge for the rest of their lives in a range of sports. We encourage the Foundation - Grade 2 students to continue to practise this skill at home by kicking a ball at a target.
Year 3 - 6
The Grade 3 - 6 students have been learning about the sport of soccer. The students have been practising their dribbling skills, passing and shooting. They have begun to use this knowledge in game play situations where students have been working together as a team to compete against each other. The grade 3 - 6 students will be learning about the sport of Tee Ball in the coming weeks as we approach the end of the year.
Athletics
On Wednesday 11th October a group of students participated at the Northern Metropolitan Athletics Championships at Meadowglen International Stadium. The 8 students who represented our school qualified after finishing in the top 2 of their event at the Woodlands District Athletics event. It was fantastic to see our students compete and represent our school with pride. Although the results didn’t go our way, all of the students tried their very best and should be proud of what they achieved. Congratulations to Remmi (4C), Zuhra (5/6C), Faatau (5/6C), Nathan (5/6A), Rayan (5/6C), Daniel (5/6D), Markena (5/6D) and Navroop (5/6D).
Volleyball
On Friday 20th October the Girls Volleyball team competed at the SSV Woodlands District Volleyball tournament hosted by Dallas Brooks Primary School. The team won 3 out of 5 games on the day and represented our school with Pride and Zest. The girls worked well together as a team and got progressively better as each game went on. Although we didn’t go through to the next round, the girls tried their very best and were applauded by everyone for the energy we brought. The girls were informed by a number of spectators on the day that Gilgai Plains were definitely the loudest school there.
Cricket
On Friday 27th October the Girls Cricket team competed at the SSV Woodlands District Cricket tournament hosted by Dallas Brooks Primary School. The girls won both of their pool games and qualified for the grand final in which they also won with an amazing 224 to 88 scoreline. On the day the girls competed with respect and enthusiasm. We are very proud to announce that the girls have now qualified for the Northern Metropolitan Primary Girls Cricket finals to be held on November 10th at Dallas Brooks Primary School.
