Year 4

Ms Roberts, Ms Yammouni, Ms Bowman and Ms Murphy

Hello Year 4 Families, Term 4 is underway and learning is happening everywhere!

Literacy

When creating texts students have focused on writing formally and informally this week and explained when it is appropriate to use informal language. Our focus is now shifting to narratives. Students are designing their own characters and settings and developing a detailed plan for their creating writing. Students are focusing on ensuring their writing has high level vocabulary and appropriate punctuation for character dialogue.

Our Core Knowledge studies are continuing to focus on the respiratory system and the circulatory system. This week we are studying the different chambers of the heart and learning new vocabulary such as atrium and ventricle. We are taking a closer look at blood and examining what happens when we bleed and how our blood clots.

Numeracy

In Number and Algebra this month our Year 4s have focused on using their addition and subtraction knowledge to solve multi-step worded problems, they will continue to practise this skill as part of their daily review. Our new learning focus is now on time. Students are telling time to the minute and focusing on using am and pm notation when recording digital times. Students will then use this knowledge to solve elapsed time problems.

Health

Our knowledge investigation this week is all about the heart. Students are creating their own puzzle model of the heart and labelling the different parts. Students will have time to explore the app The Human Body Lite, which can be downloaded at home for free. Students will continue their learning through hands-on activities. Students' knowledge of the different cells  and their functions will enable them to create a fractional model of blood as their final investigation for the week.
