Year 1 November Newsletter

We cannot believe that we are already halfway through Term 4! We are excited to share all the amazing learning that has been happening throughout these past few weeks.

Literacy

In Phonics, we have learnt the phoneme/grapheme /ir/ as in ‘dirty shirt’. Students have practised reading and spelling words with /ir/. We learnt that when spelling, we need to be aware of how this phoneme may also be represented by /ur/ and /er/ graphemes. With lots of practice, students have been able to differentiate between these graphemes when writing. They have also done a great job in including capital letters and full stops in their sentences.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have been learning how to find the difference between two numbers, using their knowledge of subtraction. Students have been busy using hands-on numeracy materials, such as counters and Unifix blocks, to develop and support their subtraction skills. They have done a wonderful job of interpreting both numeral and worded problems.

Health

Within our Health unit, the students have continued to learn about the human body systems. Over the last fortnight, we have loved learning about the circulatory and nervous systems. Students have learned some very interesting facts, such as how our blood travels around our body through our blood vessels, or how the spine is a cluster of bones that protects our spinal cord.

Rock Climbing Excursion

Students also loved attending their rock climbing excursion at GoClimb, where they challenged themselves to climb up the different walls as high as they could! Through this excursion, students were able to apply their knowledge of the muscular system, where they used their muscles to climb up the wall and exercised to make their muscles stronger. Students were also able to experience how their respiratory system worked, by taking fast, deep breaths to take in more oxygen.
