Amazing 5/6

What’s going on?

We are almost finished week 4 already, and we have crammed so much into this term. The students have been creating some fascinating and insightful persuasive pieces that Mr B and I have really enjoyed reading, especially when compared to their work at the start of the year. Their understanding of the structure and language needed to be persuasive has improved and I was surprised at the maturity of the reasons and evidence given to support their arguments.

I was also lucky enough, along with Ms Anna, to attend an awards ceremony for Sahana, in the city at RMIT University, where she received a High Distinction for her work in the Victorian Government’s Maths Talent Quest Competition. It was so pleasing to see one of our hard-working students being recognised for something she really cares about. Well Done Sahana!

The students have also made a really positive start to the school’s Bike Ed program, with everyone looking nervously excited for the practice and for the Big Ride Out in a few weeks’ time. Please keep reminding them to bring their bikes and helmets for a Friday.

With only 7 weeks left, I want to continue pushing the message of our 5/6 students being role models and leaders for the younger students. There have been a few incidents, out in the yard and before and after school, of inappropriate language and body shaming occurring, both over social media and in person. Please continue to have discussions with your child about this at home and that it is alright to tell a teacher that it has happened, and if anything occurs that you believe Sam and I need to address at school, our emails are below.

As always, please contact Sam or Nick if you need anything to support your child or about any of the upcoming events. Our emails are: Nicholas.Duckett@education.vic.gov.auSamuel.Boontjes@education.vic.gov.au

Student Report

Hi, my name is Isabella, and I am a leader in roller skating, and I am Hugo, and I am a leader in Tesla and AI and robotics.

In Maths, we have been learning about fractions. We looked at improper fractions and equivalent fractions.

In Writing, we have been doing persuasive texts. This is Hugo’s example of an introduction:

Everyone must buy an electric car! First, it is good for the environment. Furthermore, they will be around in the future. Lastly, lot of companies are making them. Just imagine, how clean and noiseless the air will be?

In Inquiry, we have been learning about the Victorian Gold Rush. We originally had 7 million people in Australia, and the Gold Rush made our population grow. Now we have 27 million people here!

In Reading, we finished 47 Degrees. It was emotional, but pretty good.
