Classroom News

Foundation

In Foundation, we have been learning all about patterns during our Numeracy sessions. We have been copying, continuing and creating two and three step patterns using movement, objects and colours!

Year 1

In Year 1 Italian, we have enjoyed revising basic greetings and how to ask someone how they are feeling. To help us remember, we sing a song and do actions. The song is called "Ciao Buongiorno".

It goes like this:

Ciao buongiorno.

Ciao buongiorno.

Come stai?

Come stai?

Molto molto bene.

Molto molto bene.

Grazie a te!

Grazie a te!

Maybe you can ask your child to sing it to you at home, or even teach it to you!

Year 2/3

Hello wonderful families,

Home learning starts this Thursday the 22nd of February. As stated in the Term Overview this year your child will have a Home Learning Folder. Inside will be their personal diary, this is used for communication between parents/caregivers and teachers. In addition to communication this diary will be used to log reading each night, please sign that your child has read. Teachers will also sign your child’s diary on Thursday. We encourage children to do 20 minutes of reading every night at home and talk to you about what they are reading. A copy of questions you can ask your child about the book they are reading is in the clear plastic folder where you will find the diary as well. Some students will have Take Home Readers and others will have novels they have chosen. This gets bought in on a Thursday morning, children will change over the books during the day and take home new books each Thursday afternoon. Inside the diary you will also find your child’s Essential Assessment Individual Learning plan for Maths home learning. As part of Writer’s Notebook, we encourage you to help your child find ‘Seeds’ for their writing. Things such as photos of events that happen, movie tickets or other ideas. Please note it is our shared class assembly in week on Thursday the 7th of March. The assembly starts at 2.40pm. It would be lovely to see families attend. This week as you may know, we have moved classrooms and the children have been excited for the move. We had our first day in the class today and the transition was calm and joyful.

New Books for the Library.

Last Year the students of Y3/4 (now Y4/5 students) participated in an Author Study, learning about different authors and then wrote a persuasive letter to Mark, asking him to buy some new books for the school library. Mark gave us a budget to spend and the students chose different books, as well as new editions of some book series that we already had. This is another example of students having a say in their learning (Student Voice). Towards the end of the year I was able to order these books, and they have now all arrived. They will soon be on the library shelves for the students to borrow.

Some of the new books are:

Box set of the Bad Guys Series 1-10 by Aaron Blabey, Wolf Girl Series 1-9 by Ahn Do, Amulet Series 1 - 8 by Kazu Kibuishi, Monster Island and You Choose by George Ivanoff, Tom Gates Book Series 1-3, Wundersmith Series 1-3 by Jessica Townsend and Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell.

Year 4/5

On Tuesday the 13th of February, year 3 to 6 had an amazing scientific incursion with “Mad About Science”. Our awesome teacher’s name was Sharyn and she answered all our wonderings about the human body, which is our wonderful topic for this term. We all did epic experiments like when we were going to find out if antacids were a base, if gastric juice was an acid and if water was neutron. One moment that I liked was when we were in pairs and we got to hear each other’s heartbeat with a stethoscope. What I also learnt was that there are different systems that happen in our body.   Brenton

On Tuesday the 13th February, the 3/4, 4/5 and 5/6 students had an incursion about The Human Body. We did an experiment where we were mixing cabbage juice with water and antacid. We have all sorts of acids in our bodies. We also did this other experiment about reflection to do with our eyes. We made orbeez. We had to grow the orbeez by putting water in half of a ziplock bag with the tiny bead. How did I feel about the “Mad About Science” incursion - really fantastic and a little overwhelmed because I could smell vinegar.   Stephanie

Last Tuesday, the years 3 to 6 had a Science incursion. It was called “Mad About Science”. We got to make our own orbeez and see the difference between water, garlic juice and antacid. And then we put cabbage water in each one to see the results. We were also trying to catch the ruler in the one-hand challenge. I also did heart activities with my partner. It was honestly pretty much a lot of fun and it made me more curious after that!   Lauren

On the 13th of February, we had an incursion and I learnt about the human body. When I first went into the Multi Purpose Room, it looked a bit different. There were so many interesting things about the human body all around the room and so many things we could work with. We did experiments on acids and bases. Also we made orbeez and I still have mine at home. I really enjoyed doing the experiments. Hopefully we can do more Science this year.   Azariah

Year 5/6

Religion ~ The Good Samaritan

As we prepare for our Opening Mass next week the senior students of the school have been learning about the significance of the parable of the Good Samaritan. Students from Years 3-6 have explored this powerful story through Drama, Art and Community Service

Maths ~ Place Value

Place Value has been the focus this term, with students creating Maths' expanders to deepen their understanding of the purpose and place of digits within a number.

My number is 7650. I know that my number can also be seen as;

# 7650 ones,

# 765 tens and zero ones,

# 76 hundreds and 5 tens and zero ones, and

# 7 thousands, 65 tens and zero ones - Martina

Math's Expanders help me with my Math's because they explore place value and the different way we see numbers.

WellBeing

Getting to Know You activities are done and dusted, but we wanted to share our Hoodies with the wider community. We used this template to tell more about ourselves to our classmates. They look great!!
