Music News with Mrs Duke

What an excellent start to Term One we have had in the Music Room. Through songs, games and playing instruments our Foundation students have been learning all about each other. While playing, singing and dancing we are discovering how to be good leaders, how to take turns on the instruments and work as a team. Our Foundation classes have taken it all in their stride with everyone having a go at every activity!

This term the Year 1/2 classes have had an Ocean theme. While exploring beat, rhythm and various musical styles we have sung and danced to many a sailor, fishy and boating song. Look out for those students in Millie building, many will happily sing you a sea shanty or sea song if you ask!

So far this term the Year 3/4 students have been exploring our excellent range of tuned percussion. These are the marimbas, xylophones, glockenspiels and chime bars. Each class has worked incredibly cooperatively to set up, play together and get packed up with the least amount of fuss. Also, I don't mind telling you, they sound really good - we're nearly at the recording stage! Stay tuned, I think an assembly performance may be in order from at least one of these classes.

Year 5/6 students, what a great time we have had so far this term. Beginning by reviewing some of our musical elements such as rhythm and dynamics, we have quickly moved on to use that knowledge in our musical compositions. Feel free to ask your student to show you what they have been working on in Chrome Music Lab - most have saved a link to their work via their iPads. It's been impressive to see the unique and thoughtful ideas in their pieces. Soon we will be transferring our digital compositions onto our real instruments - it could be a challenge but I'm confident they're up to the task.

CHOIR NEWS

Our new Miners Rest Choir is up and running. I look forward to Thursday lunch as students come in to the music room with big smiles on their faces. I can't wait for you to hear this fabulous group, they're working so hard and they sound beautiful. We are yet to think of a good name for our group so if you have any suggestions please pass it on.

If your student is in Year 4, 5, or 6 and would like to join this group it is not too late, they just need to rock up to the music room after lunch eating time on Thursday. They still get some play time in afterwards too.

SPECIAL MENTION

Mr C, Mrs Polson and I had the opportunity to see Annie at the Civic Hall on Sunday evening. It was an excellent performance, and it was a joy to see one of our own Miners Rest students up on stage, Amilie Van Raaphorst. Congratulations Amilie in your role as orphan Kate and good luck with the rest of the performance season.
