German Host Family and Exchange opportunities!!!

1. Bayerischer Jugendring student exchange

Dear Parents and/or Guardians of students of German in Years 9 and 10 The AGTV is a registered Student Exchange Organisation (SEO) with the VRQA. The AGTV coordinates the Bayerischer Jugendring student exchange, a reciprocal 10-week exchange between students in Bavaria and Victoria.

Students in Years 9 or 10 from AGTV member schools apply this year for the exchange to begin in 2025.

Expressions of Interest forms for the AGTV-BJR 2023-2026 round of the exchange are open now. PLEASE NOTE THESE ARE DUE BY 31 MARCH 2024, which is earlier than last year.

The Expression of Interest is only the first step of the process. Formal application forms will be forwarded to students by 7 April. Further information about the process is on the AGTV website. A brochure about the exchange (current for Feb 2024) and the Expression of Interest Form for 2024 can now be downloaded from the AGTV website.

2. SAGSE (Scholarship of Australian German Student Exchange) is an organisation offering scholarships to students in Australia who are in year 11 or 12 to travel to Germany on a 10-week exchange at the end of November. Since this exchange is not reciprocal, we are looking for host families who are willing to have a German student in their home for 10 weeks in Term 2 of 2024. Hosting a German student will advance interested students to the second part of the scholarship application process, the interview stage. On the other hand, if students are not interested in participating in an exchange the benefits of having a German speaking person in your house are immense.

We currently have 4 students at VSC who are taking part in the BJR Student Exchange where 4 of our own students go to Bavaria later in the year. We also have 1 student in Yr11 who will be hosting a German student in Term 2 of 2024 and may also take part in a future exchange. If you’d like further information, please contact your German teacher.

Neither program is organised or run by the school, but we work very closely with the AGTC (Association of Teachers Victoria) and we open our doors and welcome students if our families wish to host. It’s a great experience for all and a great opportunity to meet a new friend from Germany!!

Incroyable!! Unglaublich !!

Unbelievable – would you believe that we are already mid-term, and the Term is going quickly!! We continue to be impressed by the way in which our students are progressing in their language classes. At the time of writing, most classes in Years 7- 9 have completed their 1st development task and we are fast approaching the preparation stage for the final production task. Please be sure to listen to your teacher’s feedback so you are ready for this task!!

Students in Years 10-12 are also preparing for a final task towards the end of the term so the same applies for them! Our 11's and 12's in both French and German will be having their1st SAC of the year in Week 6 and our Year 10's will also be having an assessment at this time too.

Our Bavarian Partners

We are very excited to welcome a number of German exchange students to Vermont Secondary College this term. The students are getting to know Australian culture and customs, including some of our famous food specialities. Our Year 11 visitors have been treated to some home-made lamingtons and fairy bread by the students in their class. We wish them all the best for their stay in Australia and value the cultural exchange, which they are providing for our students!
