Vermont Secondary College

VM from a student perspective

What is VM? What happens in the class? What is the work like? Well to start, VM is the abbreviated name, the real class is called Vocational Major. In VM we have 4 different classes: numeracy, literacy, personal development and work-related skills.

In numeracy, we go over more math related work, we go from things like graphs to formulas, to data, and with Mrs. Hubble and Mr. Paragreen, it makes the classwork not feel like forced labour and more like an activity.

In literacy we do a large range of things, we go from things like creating our own stories to learning about history, currently we are choosing an important person in history and with that we are “nominating” them for an award, and with this we have to write about why we think they deserve this “award” and some key info about them.

With Mr. Henderson as our teacher, he really shows us more than meets the eye.

Personal development is a little different than the other classes. Instead of doing more mainstream work we focus more on everyday life situations. Currently we are working with people's emotions, and how we can be emotionally intelligent. Ms Arthur is doing a great job here.

Lastly work-related skills, with the awesome Mr Pinder. This class is about trying to help us more in the future then now. We are currently trying to work on, you guessed it, work related skills. We learn how to get a job, what other jobs our future can hold etc.

Overall V.M is a great choice and I highly recommended it. It really goes into more detail about our upcoming lives after high school, and really helps us understand how to be the best we can be.
