Vermont Secondary College

 HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The annual junior swimming carnival was held once again at Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre’s outdoor pool. There may have been a power outage at Vermont Secondary College, but the atmosphere was electric. There were numerous highlights from the day including house pride with many dressed in their house colours, standing poolside cheering for their peers with painted signs of support, from the elite swimmers showcasing their prowess to the casual swimmers getting the job done for those precious house points, and finally the staff v senior students relay organised by Miss U was another highlight.

Results from the day were as follows:

1st place Stirling, 800 points

2nd place Hotham, 679 points

3rd place Macedon, 609 points

Well done to all for a fantastic day, those who have qualified for division swimming will be contacted shortly regarding this event which will take place on Monday the 4th of March at Oakleigh Recreation Centre.

Next up on the carnival calendar is the whole school athletics carnival which will be held on Thursday the 7th of March at Bill Sewart Athletics Track.

SENIOR ROUND ROBIN

Girls Cricket

Vermont Senior Girls Cricket team performed very well winning the competition at Lum reserve last Friday. We played two games with the following scores: Vermont 0/105 v Mt Waverley 2/93 ; Glen Waverley 1/43 v Vermont 4/44 after 5 overs. The girls are to be congratulated on their attitude and conduct on the day with all players contributing to the team victories. The win over Mt Waverley was a highpoint with Rituja making 50 runs and Amelie 46 runs. We now move on to the Regional finals on 7th March.

Senior Boys/Mixed Baseball

Vermont SC was proudly represented by a fantastic group of boys who played with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship.  We had a great first game against Glen Waverley coming away with the win in a close one.  Highlights for the game included a huge triple by Cadyn and some great teamwork to pull off a double play which shutdown Glen Waverley’s inning and helped to secure the win.

In our second game we came up against a formidable Mount Waverley team.  We were far more competitive than the scoreline unfortunately suggested in a game that included some great aggressive baserunning and catches in the field.  Special mention to Evan and Ash who teamed up as pitcher and catcher to strike out two batters in a row against a strong hitting lineup.

Well done to Evan, Ash, Kav, Levi, Caelan, Oliver, Will, Anders, Arjun, Ethan, Leander, Taj and Cadyn!

Tennis

Our Boys ‘A’ Team put in a good showing for the day with some excellent serves, rallies and winners from all over the court.  The boys won their first match against Glen Waverley 5 set to 1.  Their second round was similar with a win over Mt Waverley with 5-1 sets.  Their last round was the decider against Highvale as to who would advance to the next round.  Unfortunately, despite some creativity with their shots, they were unable to win a set against a confident Highvale team.

The girls took their positive attitudes onto the court but were unable to secure a win against Glen Waverley or Mt Waverley.  Shout out to Lucy though, who won a singles match and a doubles match with Sophie.

Boys/Mixed Volleyball

It was a strange day at senior boys volleyball, both for the A and B team. After losing the first set 15-7 (we clearly weren’t awake yet), the A team returned serve in the second set to take it out 15-5. In the crucial decider, we were timed out giving Mt Waverley the win. The second game against Highvale went in similar fashion, getting smashed in the first before hitting back in the second set. Again, though, we were down when the buzzer sounded – another incomplete set, but another loss.

All was not lost though – because there was no dominant team, we still had a chance to qualify for the final. We lost in dramatic fashion, going down 17-15 in the deciding set to Glen Waverley. So, for a lot of hard work, we ended up 0-3. Not what we were hoping for, but competitive the whole way through.

The B team had two very competitive matches against Highvale and Mount Waverley, going down in both matches in the deciding third set. With fears that we would go home with nothing but ‘donuts’, the B team stood tall in the final match against Glen Waverley. Trailing by a set and down 14-9 in the second set, the boys went on an absolute tear and won the set 17-15. They then carried the momentum into the deciding set where they took control. Finally - a win!

Thanks to all involved. We didn’t win a lot, but you were an absolute pleasure to coach.

Girls Volleyball

The A girls did an amazing job at volleyball, developing their skills with each game. The second game against Highvale was lost by a single point in the third set and featured some great rallies. Unfortunately, in the end the highly consistent Glen Waverly team were too dominant and came out on top of the A pool.

The B girls were also fantastic and managed to get a W in their second match against Highvale. Some excellent serving and long rallies made it a great game to watch. The other games were unfortunately lost, so we didn’t play finals in this pool either.

Thanks to all the girls for being good sports, keeping the vibes up with some tunes, and helping with the scoring and lines-keeping on the day. See you next year! Ms Mills
