We are excited to share our Year Level program information with you for this term. Next newsletter, we will feature our amazing specialist program.
Prep
In English, students will continue to develop their literacy skills through a variety of experiences. In Reading, students will continue to use the 'Little Learners Love Literacy' program exploring consonant/vowel/consonant words, suffixes and double letter sounds (ll, ss, ff, ck, sh, ch, th, ng). In Writing, students will continue to develop their fine motor skills and explore transactional (letter) writing and narrative texts. In Speaking and Listening, students will have regular opportunities to share their ideas with others during class discussions, focusing on speaking clearly with appropriate volume.
In Numeracy, students will continue to develop their counting and place value knowledge, focusing on teen numbers. Students will explore concepts of addition such as count all, counting on from the larger number, make-to-ten facts and doubles. They will also form simple yes/no questions to collect, record and interpret data displays. Students will also participate in a two week ‘Potato Olympics’.
In Curiosity, students will be involved in a science unit called ‘Whatever the Weather’. Students will be learning about different types of weather. They will make connections between seasons and communicate how the weather personally affects their everyday lives. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in weather experiments.
In PEP, students will continue to explore the College values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationships. They will continue to develop personal and social capabilities by working on their ability to self-regulate and practise calming strategies down. Students will also explore how they can use their iPad safely at school.
Year 1
In English, students will continue to develop their literacy skills through a variety of experiences and activities. In Reading and Viewing, students will further develop their reading strategies through modelled, shared, guided and independent reading experiences. They will continue to focus on our Reading Powers with a focus on inferring, fluency and searching for and using information, within fiction and non-fiction texts. In Writing, students will continue to use their Writer’s Notebook to write about topics and ideas of interest, delving into exploring procedural and narrative texts.
In Mathetmatics, students will be consolidating their knowledge of counting and place value by reading, writing, ordering, and partitioning numbers. Students will be introduced to division as sharing and develop an understanding of what makes an equal group.
In Curiosity, students will be involved in a science unit called 'Science is All Around Us.' They will get to participate in a Science incursion and engage in a range of activities exploring how light and sound are produced, transmitted and sensed. Students will be creating their own musical instruments to showcase their learning.
In PEP, students have the opportunity to set and reflect on a goal. They will continue to learn about positive coping strategies to support emotional regulation and explore problem solving when working collaboratively and independently.
Year 2
This term in reading we will be focusing on making connections with the texts that we are reading to help our ability to infer and make meaning of a text. We are continuing to focus on decoding strategies to help us work out a new or unfamiliar word. In Writing, we are focusing on narrative writing. We will look at the structure of a story, where authors find their ideas, rereading and editing our writing. We are continuing to strengthen our ability to use effective strategies when spelling words.
In Mathematics we are focusing on place value and multiplication. As part of our measurement units, we will look at capacity and time. You can work with your child at home by talking about time and capacity in your everyday life. For example, for time - we have to leave for Nan's house at 2pm. We have 15 minutes. Use calendars and add important dates. Include reading analogue clocks as part of daily life. For capacity - cooking, filling the car with petrol, adding water to drink bottles, choosing a container that would hold more water etc. Curiosity - this term Year 2 students are historians. We are looking at how changing technology has impacted our daily lives. We are thinking about other people and different perspectives.
Year 3
The term ahead we're diving into another exciting term with our Year 3 students fully engaged in the Curiosity Unit titled 'My Island Home'. Throughout this unit, they'll be delving deep into the captivating geography of Australia, exploring its diverse landscapes and unique features. In Mathematics, our students will be tackling a range of topics including fractions, shapes, and mastering addition and subtraction strategies. In literacy, the focus is on honing their analytical skills through critiquing and crafting persuasive and narrative writing pieces. Anticipation is building for their upcoming camp at Phillip Island Adventure Resort in Week 9 of this term. The students are buzzing with excitement as they prepare for an unforgettable camp!
Note to all families: Please ensure you have completed the online dietary information form for the upcoming camp that was emailed on the 17th of July. If you require any assistance with completing the form, please see our Year 3 Team Leader, Ashleigh Dent.
Year 4
In Year 4 Curiosity, students are exploring the fascinating world of our planet Earth. They are learning to identify Earth's unique features and how it differs from other planets. The curriculum includes understanding Earth's rotation and orbit, and the effects these movements have on our environment. Students will also investigate the diverse climates of Australia and its neighbouring countries, as well as how Earth's surface changes over time. Throughout the term, students will undertake a research task and conduct mini-science experiments to illustrate Earth's processes. By the end of the term, they will complete an iDiscover project to consolidate and showcase their knowledge and understanding of the unit.
This knowledge helps students grasp how Earth’s rotation and orbit impact climate and daily life, fostering an appreciation for our planet's dynamic nature. By exploring diverse climates and the factors influencing them, students gain insights into climate change and environmental conservation, enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Year 5
As we embark on Term 3, we're excited to share the engaging topics we have planned for our Year 5 students. Under the subject of "Curiosity," students will explore the rich history of the Victorian Goldfields, with a special highlight being our camp at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. This immersive overnight camp, scheduled from Thursday, August 22nd to Friday, August 23rd, will offer students a unique opportunity to experience daily life on the Goldfields through a variety of interactive activities. This hands-on experience will deepen their understanding and appreciation of our history unit.
In Mathematics, our focus will begin with concepts of area and perimeter, providing students with practical applications and problem-solving skills. As the term progresses, we will delve into fractions, decimals, and percentages, helping students develop a strong foundation in these essential areas of numeracy.
Our Literacy program will engage students with fractured fairytales, exploring how these creative retellings can offer new perspectives on familiar stories. We'll also delve into various themes and books that are currently capturing students' interest. Additionally, we will concentrate on practicing grammar, paragraph construction, and understanding different Points of View (POV). These activities are designed to enhance students' writing skills and critical thinking.
We look forward to a term filled with curiosity, exploration, and growth!
