A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Carergivers
As we continue our mission to nurture the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—I want to take a moment to address the important topic of digital device usage among our students. In this rapidly evolving digital age, the role of technology in education and everyday life is undeniable. However, with great opportunities come significant responsibilities, especially in safeguarding our children.
The Role of Digital Devices in Education
At Salvado Catholic College we integrate technology into our curriculum to enhance learning experiences, foster creativity, and prepare our students for the future. However, we also recognise the potential challenges that come with the use of digital devices, including exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and the temptation to overuse screens.
Monitoring with Love and Responsibility
Our Catholic values guide us to protect and guide our children, ensuring that their experiences are positive and aligned with our faith. This includes being vigilant about their digital activities. We encourage you, as parents and guardians, to actively monitor your children's use of smartphones, tablets, and computers. This involves setting appropriate boundaries, using parental controls, and having open, honest conversations about their online behaviour.
Parents and Caregivers can manage their children's use of school-issued mobile devices using which is a free iPhone and Android app tUsing Jamf Parent, you can restrict and allow apps and device functionality on your children's devices. You can only manage your children's devices with Jamf Parent during the time periods specified by your school's Information Technology department, more information on Jamf Parent is available here. Please contact IT Helpdesk at the College (helpdesk@salvado.wa.edu.au) if you have any issues or require assistance with setting up Jamf Parent.
Tips for Healthy Digital Use
- Set Clear Guidelines: Establish rules for when and where devices can be used. Consider screen-free times, such as during family meals or before bedtime.
- Open Communication: Discuss with your children what they are doing online. Encourage them to share their experiences and express any concerns they might have.
- Faith-Based Reflection: Encourage your children to reflect on their online behaviour through the lens of our Catholic teachings. Are they being kind, respectful, and considerate? Are they using their time wisely?
- Modelling Behaviour: As adults, we are role models for our children. Demonstrate healthy digital habits by balancing your own screen time with other activities.
Partnering Together
We are committed to partnering with you to ensure our students develop not only academically but also as moral and ethical individuals. Our staff is here to support you in this journey. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, Year Coordinator in the Secondary or the College Psychologist/Counsellor if you need assistance or resources on managing digital device use.
Thank you for your continued dedication to your child’s education and well-being. Together, we can create a safe, nurturing, and faith-filled environment that supports our students in becoming responsible digital citizens.
Peace & Goodness to all,
Ian Hagen
