In Week 4 of this term, Salvado Catholic College celebrated National Languages Week, an event that highlights the rich and diverse languages spoken and taught in homes and schools throughout Australia.
Primary students enjoyed making pizza and pasta (fatto a mano!) with Signora Major and Signora Arfuso and playing the Italian game bocce.
Secondary students in classes participated in a variety of enriching activities including quizzes, kahoots and interactive surveys as well as making the Italian snack bruschetta. Students throughout the college enjoyed eating delicious cannoli, playing bocce at lunchtime or participating in the College’s Manga Art competition.
This year’s Languages Week motto, “Language is a bridge, not a barrier” encourages Australians to use the community languages we speak to connect with one another.
Year 2 to Year 6 - Science Week
The Year 2-6 Primary Science classes celebrated and acknowledged the
National Science Week theme: Species Survival – More than just Sustainability by investigating how we are all part of the wonderful, interconnected web of life. All the plants and animals (including us) are part of a large community that all work together to create a special environment.
We specifically examined the important role of leaves in the natural environment. We learned that they need sunlight, water, air and good soil to thrive and survive. Classes also investigated how leaves help to purify the air that we breathe, classified them as simple or compound, used scientific vocabulary to label each part and identified types of leaves that can be safely consumed as well as their medicinal and health benefits.
We especially loved exploring the outdoor environment to find and photograph leaves of different shapes and sizes, and to create a leaf collection from once-living leaves. All of our Leaf Investigations for National Science Week have been uploaded to our Seesaw Journals. You can view our individual work there. Leaves can be lovely and they can be lucky, but most importantly they are life-giving and life-sustaining.

🌿 Science Week 2024: Species Survival - More Than Just Sustainability 🌿
This week, our students across the College have dived into the fascinating world of science with the theme Species Survival - More Than Just Sustainability. Through hands-on activities, they've explored critical issues that impact our planet and its inhabitants.
Our budding scientists tested various dishwashing detergents to determine their effectiveness in cleaning oil, reflecting on the broader implications for environmental cleanliness and marine life. They also examined different brands of sunscreen, evaluating not just their effectiveness in protecting our skin but also their eco-friendliness, considering the health of our oceans and the species within them.
These activities have sparked curiosity and a deeper understanding of how our everyday choices affect the survival of species on our planet. It's been an inspiring week of discovery, learning, and action so far!
Our Year 7 students had an amazing day at the zoo! 🎉 They kicked off the trip with an educational talk on classification, learning how scientists categorise animals. Armed with this knowledge, they explored the animal enclosures, identifying and naming various organisms.
From the intriguing Slow Loris and playful Capuchin’s, to the adorable Otters, majestic Zebra, and lively Meerkats, our students saw a wide range of species. 🐍🦧🦊🦓🐾
It was a fantastic hands-on learning experience that brought their biology lessons to life. 🌿📚 Check out the smiles and curiosity captured in these photos! 📸✨
Fifteen Year 9 students recently had the exciting opportunity to attend a hairdressing career-taster program at Murdoch TAFE. The day was filled with hands-on activities and insightful lessons that provided a glimpse into the world of hairdressing. The students were guided by Naomi, an experienced hairdressing teacher, who shared fascinating stories about the trade and offered valuable advice for those considering a career in the industry.
Throughout the session, the students learned essential skills such as how to properly cape-up a client, ensuring they are ready for their salon experience. They also practiced washing and blow-drying hair, a fundamental task in any hairdressing role. The hands-on experience didn't stop there—students had the chance to try their hand at braiding and straightening hair, working both on each other and on mannequins. The program not only gave students a taste of the practical skills required in hairdressing but also sparked interest in a creative and rewarding career path.
A big 'Thank You' to Ms Daniels for chaperoning the students on this great hands-on learning experience.
