Learning in Action

Wellbeing

Learning in Action:

Students this fortnight reflected on their own experiences of emotions. Students were asked to draw a time they felt a strong emotion and if comfortable, share that with their peers. Students also started looking at personal strengths and skills. The students were asked to use the skills of listening, noticing, cooperating and communicating. We reflected that these are skills that are needed both in the classroom and the playground. These teamwork skills help people to learn and have fun as well as help to make the classroom a happy and safe place for everyone.

Preview for Learning:

Students will continue looking at personal strengths and skills in the next fortnight. Students will practice their listening and self-regulating skills. After that, students will become detectives and discover the kinds of actions that generate a sense of pride.

Literacy

Learning in Action:

This fortnight in reading we consolidated the soft g and soft c sounds. We learnt that when the grapheme g or c comes before an e, i or y, it makes the soft g or c sound. We also played Celebrity Heads where we practised our encoding and decoding skills. This week students also looked at different images and worked in groups to make personal connections to the places and objects in the pictures.

In writing, we practised writing words that have the soft g and soft c sound and learned the difference between a question and a statement. This week we also followed the writing process to develop an informative piece on an animal. Students drew their animal, labelled it, wrote a draft, edited and then published their informative writing piece.

Preview for Learning:

In the coming weeks, students will learn the long vowel sounds/diagraphs /a/, /ai/ and /ay/. We will engage in a range of different activities to practise reading and writing the new sounds. Students will also begin our new unit on letters, where we will look at the structure of a letter and have a go at writing and responding to a letter.

Maths

Learning in Action: This fortnight, students have continued to learn all about addition by applying their learning to real-life maths problems. We have used examples such as ‘There are 11 gel pens and 9 sparkle pens. How many pens altogether?’ In looking at these real-life examples, students have considered the parts of the addition number sentence they can identify, which addition strategy would be the most efficient to solve it, and have explained their thinking out loud to describe to the class how they solved the problem. Students have used a range of strategies such as ‘friends of 10’, ‘counting on from the bigger number’, identifying doubles’, ‘make 10’ and ‘adding the 1s and adding the 10s’. It has been great to see some students connecting what they know about addition and subtraction to solve some problems too - this connects to our next topic!

Students also investigated positional language this week. Students had to collaborate to move through a map to get to the end. Students needed to use words such as 'forwards', 'around', '3 squares left', and 'over' to be successful.

Preview for Learning: Next week we will begin our new topic of subtraction by considering the different language associated with subtraction and coming up with an action to associate with any of these subtraction words. We will also begin our new Investigations Unit of Mass & Capacity.

Inquiry

Learning in Action:

On Monday we headed to Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground for our first excursion in Grade 1! Here we took a virtual tour of the parks in Victoria, looking at different ecosystems across the state. The Grade 1's also learnt about the human impact on our environment and sustainability strategies to help. Some of the student's favourite parts of the day include

"the bus ride", "the playground" and the "treasure hunt of natural treasure".

Overall, it was a fantastic day! Thank you to our parent helpers, Vaughn, Ella, and Kelly who came along with us as well as Mrs Roose and Miss Simms.

Message from STEM:

Exciting times ahead in STEM!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.

Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.

Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:

Opportunities to help:

  • Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
  • If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
  • If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
  • If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
  • Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program. Please email sophiechamberlain@lysterfieldps.com or melissaadams@lysterfieldps.com

Thank you for your continued support,
