Boarding House

Investing in our staff

Last week we were pleased to have Australian Boarding Schools Association (ABSA) CEO, Richard Stokes, visit the Boarding House and present a Duty of Care workshop. The workshop focuses upon sharing of ideas, building staff knowledge and capacity, and most of all, understanding the Australian Boarding Standards set within boarding schools across the Nation. This engaging workshop not only brought our staff together but it was attended by Monivae College Boarding House staff. It was our pleasure to lead this important professional development opportunity in the Western District.

Boarding Service

This week we continue our focus upon the tenets of Positive Education and living a fulfilled life. A life that encompasses:

  • Positive Emotions (P)
  • Engagement (E)
  •  Relationships (R)
  • Meaning (M)
  • Accomplishments (A)

Undoubtedly there is value in giving (a sense of meaning). No matter where, what or how, the sense of giving to others in your capacity and ability is significantly important. Ironically, providing service to others is so intrinsically rewarding and the ‘self’ tends to receive arguably as much as the receiver.

Last week, our Speirs House boys worked tirelessly to rejuvenate an area that has not been the best of views from the lower Speirs house wing. I provided an opportunity for Finn Dennis to round up a few of the boys and generate some enthusiasm about giving back to the College and making a positive contribution. Not only is this good for the boarders in the sense of service but it is also good to build their social capital and a strong sense of togetherness. Well done Finn, Logan, Frank, Eddie, and Bailey.
