Learning and Teaching - Vira Pirrotta

As the school year moves along, we are excited to be able to welcome parents into our learning spaces.

Parents' involvement in their children's education is crucial for their academic success and well-being. Overall, parental involvement in school is essential for creating a positive and supportive learning environment for children. It can lead to better academic performance, improved attendance, increased motivation and stronger relationships.

As a parent helper, you support your child's education, build relationships with teachers and other parents, and make a positive impact on the school community. It's a great way to meet new people, feel accomplished, and be a part of something bigger. The personal benefits are rewarding.

Parent helpers are a vital part of our school community. They assist with various tasks, such as classroom assistance, school events like sports days and fundraisers, and support for students, teachers, and staff. This support helps to create a positive and engaging environment for our students and enhances their learning experience.

LITERACY NEWS - Bernadette Parnis

Hi Everyone,

Term 2 has commenced and so do the usual routines. Students will continue to bring home a reader as directed by their teacher to match their reading skills. Texts that are slightly easier to read are sent home to ensure our students achieve success as they rehearse skills and strategies taught at school.

What skills are being taught?

For our students to read effectively this involves understanding the meaning of what is written and interpreting it. To be able to do this, they must be able to: decode what they read, make connections between what they read and what they already know, and think about what they have read. This includes being able to solve unfamiliar words by breaking words into meaningful chunks, predicting what might happen in the text, and activating prior knowledge on the topic, making connections to self, other texts and events beyond their circle to understand what is read.  All this requires the ability to read fluently, monitor and make self corrections.

A brief snapshot of what will be covered in Literacy this term.

Our Foundation students continue to work on learning dominant sounds of letters so that they can build their writing skills. They will read a variety of books to build their reading skills and strategies.

Year 1 and 2 students will read and identify the structure and language features of narrative texts as well as write their own narrative texts.

Year 3 and 4 students will be reading a range of narrative texts such as books with an ANZAC theme and ‘My Place’, which depicts the history of one particular piece of land in Sydney from 1788 to 1988. They will write biographies and historical narratives.

Year 5 and 6 students will read and analyse informative texts and build their note taking skills prior to writing their own informative texts. They also continue to read ‘Boy Overboard’ by Morris Gleitzman.

Who is Morris Gleitzman?

Morris Gleitzman is a bestselling Australian children’s author and was the Australian Children's Laureate for 2018 and 2019. His books explore serious and sometimes confronting subjects in humourous and unexpected ways. His titles include Two Weeks With The Queen, Grace, Doubting Thomas, Bumface, Give Peas A Chance, Extra Time, Loyal Creatures, Tweet and the series Once, Then, After, Soon, Maybe, Now and Always. Morris lives in Sydney and Brisbane, and his books are published in more than twenty countries. Source https://www.morrisgleitzman.com/

NUMERACY NEWS - Colleen Monaghan

As we prepare to celebrate ANZAC Day, I thought it might be good to share the recipe I love using for making ANZAC Cookies.

Cooking involves so much maths. From measuring the ingredients, to counting the number of cookies on each tray, adding each tray or multiplying the number in each row.

Not to mention how many each person in the family might eat? Sharing the cookies equally.

Ingredients

1 cup plain flour (all purpose flour)

1 cup rolled oats

1 cup desiccated coconut, unsweetened

3/4 cup white sugar, preferably caster/superfine

150g unsalted butter

4 tbsp golden syrup (Note 1)

1 tsp baking soda (bicarbonate soda)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan forced)
  2. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper.
  3. Mix flour, oats, coconut and sugar in a bowl.
  4. Place butter and golden syrup in a saucepan over medium high heat and stir until butter has melted.
  5. Add baking soda and stir to combine - it will fizz up, this is normal. Immediately remove from heat.
  6. Pour butter mixture into flour and mix until just combined.
  7. Roll level 1 tablespoon mixture into balls, flatten into patties. Place balls, 2.5cm apart, on prepared trays.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes, swapping trays halfway during cooking, or until deep golden. (Bake 12 min for chewy biscuits!)
  9. Stand on trays for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool - they harden as they cool!

Have fun cooking these and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

STEM NEWS - Joe Frazzetto

During the school holidays, I met Brickman.  Brickman is a judge on LEGO Masters Australia and is a certified LEGO Builder. His actual name is Ryan McNaught. I met Brickman by going to my dad's work, which is Kmart.  The reason he came to Kmart is because Kmart sponsors LEGO Masters.

When I met Brickman, we talked about what sets I have and what I like to build.  He even signed my LEGO book  and I got to take a photo with him.  I also got to see the LEGO Masters cup which was pretty cool. It was one of the best days ever!
