Curriculum Matters

Foundation

It’s been a busy 2 weeks in Foundation! We’ve had so many exciting experiences - from a special visit from Senior Sergeant Duncan, to an exciting excursion to MOPA and plenty of fun hanging out with our buddies!

Level 1

Our Level 1 students have been actively engaging in both Literacy and Numeracy activities.

Numeracy: In Numeracy, students explored their number skills through a teddy bear-themed task, enhancing their understanding of numbers in a fun and engaging way.

These activities have provided students with practical applications of their learning, fostering both creativity and mathematical thinking.

Literacy: Students have been focusing on procedure writing. They applied this skill by creating their own unique stew recipes, which they compiled into a class recipe book as part of their Big Write.

During SEL lessons we have been working on positive self talk and thoughts, we completed mini posters about how amazing we are and learnt some positive affirmations!

Level 2

Our Level 2 students have been learning about the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.

We’ve been exploring how our brains can grow with effort and practice, and how mistakes are an important part of learning. Through stories, class discussions and reflection activities, students are beginning to understand the power of “yet” and how a positive attitude can help them overcome challenges.

It’s been wonderful to see them encouraging one another and using phrases like “I can’t do it yet” and “Mistakes help me learn!”

Level 3

Last week, our Level 3 students had an exciting incursion with none other than Professor Bunsen!

He brought science to life with a series of mind-blowing experiments all about heat and how it can change things from solids to liquids to gases. We learned how heat energy can melt, evaporate and even shrink, as he showed us chip packets that he had shrunk in the oven. He also showed us how heat can be used to power different things and even lit his hands on fire to demonstrate how heat can travel through gases. It was an unforgettable experience that helped us understand the power of heat and the incredible science behind it.

Level 4

Last week Level 4 were working on Data and Graphing in Numeracy, to help the students understand the importance of collecting data and linking it to real life situations.

We watched a video taken on Martu Country ( Outback Western Australia) from outside a Bilby burrow. It was a motion camera that was out in the desert for about 200 days. The traditional owners were using this footage to monitor the threatened Bilies.

Our students watched an 8 minute video and tallied what the animals they saw including a feral cat and a camel.

Once the students collected the data they used different graphs to share the information they gathered as well as interrupting and making conclusions about the data.

Throughout the week the students had opportunities to find their own data to graph and interrupt. Students were able to represent their data in their books or on their laptop.

Level 5

Over the past two weeks, Level 5 students have been immersed in a fun-filled and inspiring learning journey—both under the stars and in the classroom!

One of the highlights was our Stargazing Night, where students explored the wonders of the night sky. The evening began with pizza and a lively solar system quiz, followed by constellation challenges in the gym using their bodies. With the help of the SkyView app, students then searched the real night sky for constellations and wrapped up the night by creating glow stick constellations on the school oval. It was a magical and memorable experience!

To celebrate our Inquiry unit on space this term, we held an exciting Space Day. Students proudly dressed up in creative, space-themed costumes representing planets, astronauts, stars, and more! They showcased their efforts in a joyful costume parade with our Foundation buddies. The fun continued with hands-on activities like making asteroid balls using all kinds of colourful lollies, and students relaxed with a space-themed movie while enjoying their delicious creations. It was a fantastic celebration of their learning and creativity.

In Mathematics, students have been participating in Improvement Groups focused on deepening their understanding of division. These groups targeted specific learning needs, with lessons covering fact families, short division with remainders and decimals, solving worded problems, and taking on the challenge of BIDMAS (Brackets, Indices, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction). Students showed great focus and progress in these areas.

Well done to all our budding astronomers, scientists, and mathematicians—keep reaching for the stars!

Level 6

Learning Snap Shot

This term in Level 6, our Inquiry topic was Australian History from 1900 to today

As a class, we made a big timeline on the wall with important events in Australia’s past, like when the country became a Federation, the World Wars, the 1967 Referendum, and more. It was really interesting to see how much our country has changed over time.

After that, we each picked one event to research on our own. We used books, websites, and videos to find out as much as we could, then created posters to show what we learned. Everyone’s posters were colourful and full of great facts.

In Writing, we had fun making up stories about shipwrecks. Some were scary, others were adventurous or mysterious. We learned how to build tension and describe the setting so the reader feels like they’re right there in the story.

We also read books by some amazing authors like Dr. Seuss, Mem Fox, Anh Do, and Babette Cole. We talked about what makes their writing unique and what we can learn from them to improve our own reading and writing.

It’s been a busy term with lots of learning, laughs, and creativity. We’re excited to see what’s coming up next!

School Bench Ball

On the 16th of June all captains versed the teachers in a game of bench ball.

The adrenaline was infectious, and we all had our energy pumped up. If only we were as tall as the teachers! We were a bit disappointed but all of us pushed through giving it our best effort. The gym was full so many people came to watch, cheering us on and having a great time. We might have had a chance to win but sadly that didn’t happen.

We got trashed 3 – 0, it was pretty hard trying to defend them and try to intercept their passes
