Language Diversity Day

On Monday 2 June, Nossal High School had its annual Languages Diversity Day when all languages students at Nossal participated in a variety of immersive and enjoyable activities that introduced them to new aspects of different cultures.

To celebrate, the Japanese students participated in a range of workshops and activities to immerse themselves more in the culture of Japan.

To start off the day all the Japanese students participated in a Iaido and Jodo demonstration and workshop conducted by Chikushin Kai providing insight into Japanese traditional martial arts. This was followed by a range of activities that were run by the unit ½ and ¾ Japanese students for the year 9 and 10 Japanese students such as calligraphy, karate and Japanese traditional games.

Overall, the Japanese students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the culture behind the language they were learning through these activities.

The French students spent their morning enjoying a puppet show performing the children’s story of Cinderella in the languages of French and English.

The experience proved to be a novel and interactive activity, involving the students responding to the characters throughout the show, allowing the students to appreciate the same puppet show as young French children do in their childhood.

They were then taken to the other side of the world to hear the Rhythms of West Africa. They were able to learn to drum alongside the Guinean performer and move to the beats of the instruments for the first time and enjoy the music.

To end the day of language learning, an assembly was hosted for the whole school to share the cultures of Nossal. Bollywood and K-dance both performed, showcasing the wide variety of languages to the students.

Both the French and Japanese VCE students put on performances of popular songs in each language, proving to be an exciting and fun assembly for both teachers and students.
