Unit 3 & 4 Biology Excursion
On Friday 25 July, our Unit 3 & 4 Biology students travelled to The University of Melbourne Parkville campus to attend a VCE Biology laboratory workshop hosted by the School of BioSciences. The workshop gave students the opportunity to complete hands-on practical activities in a tertiary education setting, enriching their understanding of key concepts covered in the VCE Biology course.
The two-hour session addressed key content from Unit 4, Outcomes 1 and 2, through the following activities:
- Activity 1: Evidence for evolutionary change using Drosophila melanogaster
- Activity 2: Immunity and influenza: an ELISA case study
It was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience working in a university laboratory – one that is actively used by first-year science students at The University of Melbourne.
Junior Science Olympiads
At the end of Term 2, a number of our students participated in the Junior Science Olympiad – a challenging two-hour online examination covering topics in biology, chemistry, Earth science, and physics. I am always impressed by students who embrace new challenges and give something unfamiliar a go – well done and congratulations to all who took part!
A special mention goes to Shawn S. in Year 10, who achieved a high distinction, placing in the top 10% of participants.
The following students received a distinction, placing them in the next 20%: Shriyans K, Soumit P, Harkeerat O, and Surya B.
Our subject-specific Science Olympiads are being held next week, and many of our students have enthusiastically signed up to participate. We wish them all the best!
Earthwatch Australia – Student Challenge Scholarship Program
Students in Years 10 and 11 are invited to apply for a fully funded Student Challenge scholarship program. This program gives secondary school students a chance to live and work in the field with leading researchers to help solve some of Australia’s most pressing environmental issues. It is an eye-opening adventure and an exciting opportunity for students to explore their interest in science and the environment.
