Principal’s Report

June Newsletter

We have navigated the extra long term in Term 2, with some fabulous progress and achievement happening. I want to acknowledge the hard work of our staff during what is always a challenging term. I wanted to highlight the following in my report for this month.

Exhibitions of Learning and Community events

It has been fantastic to see the support of community events and for our students to embrace the opportunity to showcase their talents through the many extra curricular activities happening throughout Collingwood.

Our newly renamed Learning Hub (old homework club) is seeing lots of students utilising this opportunity to work with mentors to support their studies. The weekly markets have been well supported - feel free to buy our food offerings from our VET students each Thursday.

Our student volunteers were absolutely magnificent throughout the Community Cup. Working hard to face paint, provide popcorn, run the jaffa smash and other fabulous activities, they were able to showcase our school and model the supportive community that we have.

Thank you to all families that have attended our Music Concerts, Lantern Festival and MYP showcase. Your support means our students have a wonderful audience and a real sense of community that they are supported by in all of their endeavours here at Collingwood.

Sports teams

It has been fantastic to see our engagement in participating in sports opportunities this term from our secondary and primary school students. We’ve had teams in badminton, netball and soccer. Thank you to all our staff that have helped prepare and train our teams. Thanks Nicky Smith for coordinating our secondary teams.  It was great to see our Grade 5 & 6 students participating in the Gala day organised between schools in our local area. Thanks Mel Keks for all her work in leading this.

Roof Works

The school’s main building will see a replacement of its roof during the Term 2 holidays. The works will continue throughout Term 3.

A scaffold will be erected around the entire main building to allow the works to be carried out as efficiently as possible. All entrances and exits will be accessible with the scaffold in place. As the roof works are completed the scaffold will be removed. We will be starting on the eastern side of the building before, moving north, west and then finishing with the south.

The access to the staff carpark will be affected during the following dates - 18th August until 29th August. During this time, no cars will be able to be parked in the carpark. The schedule of works has been designed to allow for the least disruption as possible to this facility.

The Aftercare entrance will change to the gate closest to the gym. This is necessary to allow for the site compound to be connected to direct roof access. Signage will change to help with these temporary arrangements during Term 3.

There are bound to be temporary disruptions caused by these important works. We will notify everyone should there be changes to the plans. It will be well worth the disruption to have a fully functioning roof on our main building!

School Council Subcommittees

We’re inviting volunteers to join School Council Subcommittees.

As you know, parent engagement is directly linked to higher student achievement, increased sense of belonging and improved sense of well-being across all year levels. In addition, parents, staff and students’ different perspectives, skills and experiences help shape the policies and programs to better reflect the school community needs. Our shared ownership will have a positive outcome on everyone involved.

Here's a quick summary of the role of each:

  • Community Engagement: attends to the needs of the community, organises events, raises funds.
  • Education: raises and supports educational initiatives, reviews curriculum matters to ensures everything aligns with students’ and teachers’ needs.
  • Building Environment and Sustainability: improves school facilities and monitors and facilitates sustainability initiatives.
  • Commnications and Marketing: suggestions for school website and communication channels.
  • Wurun: represents both the Fitzroy High School and Collingwood College School Councils to contribute to the Wurun Senior Campus educational, community and policy initiatives.

Subcommittees meet at least 4 times a year. You can also show interest in certain activities only which means you don’t have to commit to all meetings and proposed plans or events.

If you would like to join, please email: collingwood.co@education.vic.gov.au and specify which subcommittee you would like to join. The convenor will then be in touch with you to let you know of dates for meetings.
