This week, we continued with our food theme and prepared Chilean completos for everyone. A completo is essentially the Chilean version of a hot dog. While there are several variations, we made the Completo Italiano, one of the most traditional and popular versions in Chile.
The completo italiano is likely named after the colours of its ingredients, which mirror the Italian flag, featuring avocado, tomato, and mayonnaise (not including the sausage, of course). Completos are an easy and fun dish to prepare!
To start, boil the sausages for a few minutes while dicing the tomatoes and mashing the avocado. In the meantime, warm the hot dog buns in the oven until they’re nice and toasty.
And for an extra touch of fun, you can do all this while listening to some classic Latin hits like Los Prisioneros or Chancho en Piedra!
Once everything is ready, it’s up to each person to build their own completo. Place the sausage in the bun, then top it with diced tomato, mashed avocado, and a drizzle of mayonnaise (and a bit of ketchup if you like!). Or, if you prefer, add the avocado first and then the tomato. Some people also enjoy adding finely diced onion, though we left that out this time for the kids.
Monday’s session was a huge success! The children enthusiastically named the colours of each ingredient, helped with the food prep, and confidently tried their completos—not just with sausage, but also with the full Italian-style toppings or a mix of tomato or avocado. It was wonderful to see how many gave it a go—some even came back for seconds… and cheeky thirds!
Unfortunately, we were so busy preparing and enjoying the completos that we ran out of time to run our second activity on Chilean birds and mask-making. But not to worry—we’ll reschedule it for another time.
This coming Monday, students will explore the significance of the winter solstice and learn about the New Year celebrations of Indigenous peoples in South America.
Los esperamos el lunes!!
