St Mary’s ICT Update: Device Security Changes & Phishing Awareness
As part of our ongoing efforts to protect student devices and improve digital safety at St Mary’s, we’d like to share two important updates with families this term.
1. Admin Access Removed from Student Devices
In line with updated advice from Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS), all student laptops no longer have administrator rights.
This means students can no longer install software or apps independently. Installations now require approval through the school’s IT team to ensure they are safe, appropriate, and compatible with our systems.
This change helps:
· Prevent malware and unauthorised apps
· Improve device consistency across the school
· Support faster and more secure IT troubleshooting
If a student needs a specific program for classwork, they should speak to their teacher, who can request installation approval on their behalf.
Additionally, teachers can request apps be permanently approved, so students in that class or subject can install them in future without needing to go through the request process again.
2. Phishing Scams on the Rise - Stay Alert
With the end-of-financial-year (EOFY) approaching, we’ve seen an increase in phishing emails — messages designed to trick recipients into clicking harmful links or giving away login details.
Although these scams are often aimed at adults, students are not immune, especially if school accounts are compromised.
Common signs of phishing:
· Unexpected emails asking for personal info or login credentials
· Suspicious links or attachments
· Email addresses that look close to, but not quite like, familiar names
What students should do:
· Avoid clicking suspicious links
· Never share login details via email
· Report anything unusual to a teacher or the IT team
Parents can support this effort by reminding children to be cautious when checking emails, especially during high-risk times like EOFY.
If you have any questions about these updates, or need support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the IT team. We’re here to help ensure technology at St Mary’s remains safe, secure, and focused on learning.
