Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

Well done to all of our amazing Senior Unit students on a fantastic first semester!

It has been an extremely busy start to the year and we are so proud of all the learning, growth, and fun that has taken place so far.

Inquiry

As many of you will know, students finalised and presented their impressive Light and Space science projects this week. While we always know how clever they are, the creativity and quality on display were truly mind-blowing! After a term filled with experiments, research, and simulations, students applied their learning by selecting tasks from a rubric and presenting their understanding in unique ways. Throughout the process, they developed independence, time management, and research skills; lifelong skills they will carry into future projects.

Literacy

In Literacy, students have been working on their Science Fiction narratives. We focused on sentence structure and how authors use a variety of sentence types and phrases to create more interest and rhythm in their stories. Students then revised their own writing to improve flow and coherence, applying what they had learned.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students explored 12- and 24-hour time through hands-on and practical tasks. They created daily schedules, interpreted train timetables, and converted analogue clocks from around the world to build real-world understanding of time formats.

Grade 5 Secondary School experience

On Thursday, our Year 5 students took part in an excursion to Gisborne Secondary College, where they experienced a day in the life of a secondary school student. Throughout the day, students engaged in a variety of learning activities across different subjects, including science, humanities, visual language, and drama. They also enjoyed a special morning snack of hot chocolate, fruit and donuts and had the opportunity to order lunch from the school canteen. It was a valuable and enjoyable day, giving students a positive insight into the secondary school environment

Thank you for all of your support over the semester. We hope you all enjoy a safe and happy holiday break!
