Year 2 News

Reading

This fortnight in Reading, Year 2 students have been developing their comprehension skills through fiction and non-fiction texts. They have been learning how to make inferences by looking closely at the clues in a story to understand how characters might be feeling, even when it isn’t directly written. The students have also been practising analysing books by forming their own opinions and justifying why they liked or disliked a text. These activities are helping students become more thoughtful readers who can explain their ideas and back them up with evidence from what they have read.

“I used clues in the story to work out how the character felt.”- Indy 2A

“I liked sharing my opinion about the book.”- Mya 2A

Writing

This fortnight in Writing, Year 2 students have been diving into the world of information reports! They have focussed on writing factual sentences about their chosen animal. Students have been learning how to research facts and organise their ideas into clear sections, such as appearancehabitatdiet, and interesting facts. They've also been using special vocabulary to make their writing sound just like a real report! Year 2 have done an amazing job at including extra detail to make their writing interesting and are able to describe their favourite animal features.

The students have also been discovering how to group animals based on their observable features – like body coverings (fur, feathers, scales), number of legs, or whether they have wings or fins. It’s been amazing to see how observant the students are!

The children also began learning common greetings and simple questions, including how to sign HelloGood Morning and How are you?, as well as how to respond in Auslan.

These activities are helping students build their confidence to use Auslan in everyday situations while developing their understanding that both signs and facial expressions are important in communication.

Social and Emotional Learning

Bullying No Way Week

As part of Bullying No Way week, the Year 2 cohort completed a lesson, which reinforced that everyone is different, and that this is something to celebrate. Students explored the idea that everyone belongs in the class and in the school community. When students feel a sense of belonging, they are more likely to support one another. To represent this message, students created a fish collage as a powerful visual statement, showing that even though everyone is different, they all belong together.

“We learnt that it's important to play kindly with everyone”- Saskia 2B

“Outside you can ask people on the benches if they want to play with you”- Alex 2B
