Foundation News

Reading
This fortnight in Reading, the Foundation cohort continued to learn about retelling stories. They focused on the main events while reading favourite classics such as The Ugly Duckling and Three Little Pigs. Foundation students have also started learning about syllables as they segmented familiar words. In the library, students have been finding words with two syllables and clapping them out with their peers.

Writing
The Foundation cohort continues to spell words and build simple sentences, composing three to five words. Foundation students have been saying each sound while attempting to write unknown words in their books. In celebration of Science Week, the Foundation cohort watched various experiments and wrote about their discoveries and predictions. Students have certainly come a long way in their writing skills since the start of the year!

Maths
In Maths, Foundation students have completed their unit on place value. Students focused on comparing and ordering numbers from smallest to biggest and from biggest to smallest. The Foundation cohort placed different sets of numbers such as 7, 2, 5, and 10 in order. Students have also been using the terms, “greater than” and “less than” during their discussions with their peers.

Inquiry
This fortnight in Inquiry, Foundation students began their unit on animal features. Students dived into how to identify and sort different parts of an animal. They explored how to describe different features of a bird, focusing on the wings, beak, and feathers. The Foundation cohort also discussed features of plants and examples in our environment that are made from fibers. In celebration of National Science Week, the Foundation cohort participated in a leaf investigation. Students walked around the school garden and picked out their favourite leaves to take back to the classroom and draw its features.

Auslan
In Auslan, Foundation students have been learning how to sign things around the house. Students learned to sign house, windows, door, couch, stairs, and so much more! The Foundation cohort actively engaged in signing along new songs and poems, such as, “Welcome to My House”. They also shared the signs they remembered from previous lessons with their peers.

Social and Emotional Learning
This fortnight in SEL, students celebrated Bullying No Way. The Foundation cohort focused on building positive relationships with their peers in and out of the classroom. Students identified different ways to speak kindly to others and how to improve their communication skills when interacting with teachers and classmates. The Foundation students have also been discussing how to identify if a friend needs help during recess and lunch. Students confidently described how they would help their friends and who to approach to ask for help.

Special Event - Book Week
This fortnight, the Foundation cohort took part in the school’s celebration of Book Week! Students created a poster, each class with its own unique style, and matched them with this year’s theme of adventure. Foundation students reflected on some of their favourite texts read in class, such as the Gruffalo, The Ugly Duckling, and Little Red Riding Hood. The Foundation cohort had a wonderful time during the Book Week parade as they showcased their unique character costumes and witnessed other students in the school present their book week costumes!
