Focus on Physical Education
Cross Country Congratulations
Congratulations and well done to all students from Grades 3 – 6 who ran laps and scored points for their House during the house cross country event.
This year’s final results were extremely close, and the winning house will be announced at the mid term assembly on Friday.
From these trials 50 students were selected to represent the school at the Northcote district cross country event at Bundoora. All students did a remarkable job on what is a very challenging course, with 17 of them finishing in the top ten of their race and gaining entry to the division cross country event, to be held on Thursday 30 May at Bundoora Park.
We wish the competing students the best of luck at this event.
Time for Athletics
With cross country finished, the Grades 4 – 6 students are practising their athletic skills in preparation for the schools House Athletic carnival. Students have been exploring the unique techniques that are used to throw a shot put and a discus. The students from Grades 4 – 6 will have the opportunity to try these events, as well as run races and jump into the long jump pit, at the schools House Athletics Carnival, which is on Wednesday 22 May at the Collingwood Harriers Track. This carnival is all about participation and each event that a student enters will score a point for their House.
Students in Grades 3 – 6 will have the opportunity in the coming weeks to explore high jump techniques and practise clearing hurdles while running.
Volunteer Help Needed
At the time of writing this article parent volunteers are still desperately needed to assist with the running of the house athletic event tomorrow. If you are able to help out please sign up here.
Physical Education in Foundation – Grade 2
The Foundation – Grade 2 students are working hard on their fundamental movement skills. This term we have been using exercise ladders to warm up our bodies and coordinate our movements.
Once our bodies are all warmed up, we have turned our attention to practising different throws. The Foundations have focussed on underarm throws and chest passes, the Grade 1&2 students have worked on both underarm and overarm throws. All these throws are used in many different games/sports and are the building block for other fundamental movement skills. It has been wonderful to watch the students working together and cooperating as they practise their throwing skills. Next, we are going to focus on catching.
