On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 May, Melanie (C9) aged 14 playing for Manly Warringah and Andie (C11) aged 16, playing for Sutherland, competed in the 2024 Under 18 Girls' NSW State Softball Championships at Blacktown International Sports park, which showcased the best Junior female softballers across the state!

It was a highly anticipated event, after two challenging elimination Semi Finals earlier in the afternoon, both Manly Warringah who were undefeated and Sutherland Shire progressed to the Grand Final.

With both teams battling through their fifth game of the day and at the end of the seventh inning they were at a 1-1 deadlock which then lead to a tie-breaker. Even in the tiebreaker, it became 4-4 until finally Sutherland edged the winning run to win 5-4. Congratulations to Andie and her team for taking out the Under 18 Girls' State, in one of the best State Championship Grand Finals ever hosted at the Sports park. The game took 2.5 hours to complete with neither girl resting for long before they were back on the field defending.

Both Andie and Melanie were invaluable to their respective teams, as very strong and reliable outfielders and certainly a threat in the batter’s box when faced with pitches up to 90km/hr. Their skills assisted their teams to display the very best of softball.

Congratulations to both girls for achieving their state medals as Winners and Runners Up. Both girls are outstanding role models in this sport and have certainly shown the younger members of our school how hard work and determination can pay off. Melanie now backs up to challenge the U16 State Championships in July.
