Cold and flu season

With the cooler weather upon us, we are starting to see an increase in numbers of children becoming unwell with sniffles, cough, and sore throat.

If your child is displaying symptoms of being unwell (fever – above 37.9, sore throat, cough, runny or stuffy nose, stomach-ache, nausea) please consider if they are well enough to come to school.

Please consider the health and wellbeing of other students and staff.

If your child develops any sign of illness whilst at school, we will request that you or an

adult nominated by you, collect your child from school as soon as possible.

It is also timely to remind your child about hygiene.  Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue.  Cough into your elbow, dispose of tissues into a bin, and wash hands regularly with soap and water, or use sanitizer.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

Let’s work together to stay healthy.

Head lice

Head lice are very common in schools, they are not dangerous, but very annoying and we need to have everyone on board to eradicate the problem.

Head lice:

  • Are small, wingless, blood sucking insects.
  • Are whitish brown to reddish-brown in colour.
  • Are found on the hair itself and move to the scalp to feed.

People get head lice from direct hair contact with another person who has head lice. This can happen when people are in close contact with each other. These creatures can be very hard to find.

Finding head lice

Many lice do not cause an itch, so you must look carefully to find them. Lice can crawl and hide. It is recommended to:

  1. Comb any type of hair conditioner onto dry, brushed (detangled) hair. This stuns lice and makes it difficult for them to grip the hair or crawl around.
  2. Comb sections of the hair with a fine tooth, head lice comb.
  3. Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue.
  4. Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs.
  5. Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least four or five times.

Treating head lice:

Treating head lice involves removing lice and eggs from the hair. There are two ways to do this:

  1. Buying and using a head lice lotion or shampoo, following the instructions on the product.
  2. Using the conditioner and comb method as described previously every second day until there have been no live lice found for 10 days.

No treatment kills all the eggs so treatments must involve two applications, seven days apart. the first treatment kills all lice; the second treatment kills the lice that may have hatched from eggs not killed by the first treatment.
