Library News

It’s another exciting week of exploring great stories and books from our library.

This Week’s Reads

Kindergarten are consolidating their knowledge of fiction and non-fiction and, this week, are using those terms more confidently to describe books that are about real or not real things. Students compared ‘Pig the Star’ by Aaron Blabey with ‘Cats vs Dogs’ by Elizabeth Carney and identified what made them fiction or non-fiction. Classes concluded with drawing a fact they learned about cats or dogs and then coloured in ‘Pig and Trevor from Pig the Star’. Both classes were surveyed to find their favourite pet, and (close your eyes, cat lovers) dogs won both times!

Stage 1 students are learning about special features in non-fiction books, such as a glossary, headings, and captions. They will embark on a scavenger hunt to find these features in a collection of books and then wrap up our lesson with two great books about birds. The first is a non-fiction book, ‘Australian Backyard Birdies’ by Andy Geppert, and then we will have some fun with ‘Bush Turkey’ by Kate and Jol Temple.

Stage 2 is navigating further into the Dewey Decimal System this week, where they’ll be on a hunt for some popular subjects and topics in the library. They’ll conclude by playing a Dewey Decimal System bingo game, consolidating what they’ve learned, and also reading another chapter of ‘Spaceboy’ by David Walliams.

Stage 3 is getting closer to concluding their research of a famous person with dyslexia inspired by our reading of ‘Brilliant Minds: 30 Dyslexic Heroes Who Changed the World’ by Shannon Meyercourt. They’re busy putting all they’ve learned about credible sources and evaluating websites together to find quality information and present it creatively. After reading about a sailor, a boxer, and a chef, this week we’re moving into the art world and learning about Dame Darcey Bussell, an English ballerina. After watching a short video of her dancing, we’ve all been amazed at the strength and skill required for dancing en pointe.

SORA Books of the Week - Are You a Creator?

It’s another week and another collection of wonderful audio and ebooks to read on SORA. This week’s theme is ‘Are You a Creator?’ and includes books on coding, sewing, writing, and even experimenting! Don’t forget that all of our students can use SORA, and instructions for logging in are available here.

CBCA Books of the Year: Eve Pownall Award (Non-Fiction)

Non-fiction books are one of our library's most borrowed and enjoyed collections. Students love reading about animals, countries, vehicles, and Minecraft especially! Entries in this category are books that primely intend to document factual material with consideration given to imaginative presentation, interpretation and style variation. Ages 0-18 years. These are all available in our library.

Meet the Reader

Meet Bethany in Year 8, who is currently reading all the shortlisted books in the CBCA Older Reader section of the Books of the Year. She’s now onto her second book, and I look forward to her student review in the coming weeks.

Kids Lit Quiz Congratulations!

Last week, we received the Participation and Third-Place Certificates for students who participated in last month’s Virtual Kids Lit Quiz. Our three teams succeeded on the day, each winning a round, and the Primary 3 team came third overall. Congratulations to all students, and keep reading!

New Books

Each year, I'm lucky to order wonderful new books for students to enjoy, but I also get excited about replacing our worn-out classics that have been read and loved by so many. This week, four new books (some of our favourite stories) will be on the shelves. Who hasn’t read ‘Where’s the Green Sheep’ by Mem Fox?

Also, two new, bright, and informative nonfiction books, ‘High’ and ‘Lost’ by Jess McGeachin, are ready to borrow. They add to her beautiful animal series; get in quick!

Quick Bits

  • Term 2 Book Club is coming soon
  • Heads Up - the dress-up Book Parade for Book Week will be in Week 6 of Term 3. Start thinking about those costumes!
  • Book Fair is coming in Term 3

Joey in 1E did a great job recreating a nonfiction book cover last week. Well done!

Happy reading,

Mrs Toni Fraser
