Prep News

Dear Families,

We have had a fantastic start to Term 2, with lots of exciting learning taking place across all areas of the curriculum. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to in Prep!

Literacy

This fortnight, we met two new Little Learners Love Literacy characters – Yasmin the Yak (/y/) and Roxy the Rabbit (/r/). These characters are helping us learn to identify and use the sounds /y/ and /r/ in our reading and writing.

We also began Literacy Groups, where students rotate through a variety of rich literacy activities including phonics, guided reading and spelling tasks. These small group sessions allow for targeted teaching and provide opportunities for students to practise key skills in a fun and engaging way.

In writing, we’ve been indulging in lots of writing opportunities! We continued our Weekend Writing, helping students share and structure personal experiences. We also created a collaborative poster with our buddies as part of our Inquiry unit, combining drawing, writing, and teamwork.

Mathematics

In Maths, we refreshed our understanding of numbers 1–20, revisiting number recognition, counting, and number order through hands-on activities.

We have also begun exploring addition. Students have used a variety of materials such as counters, unifix blocks, tens frames, and number lines to explore how numbers can be combined to make a total. They are learning to use mathematical language such as plus, add, equals, and altogether, makes and are beginning to develop their understanding of number stories in conjunction with our community helpers unit (e.g. “There were 3 firefighters, then came along another 4, 3 and 4 makes 7). We will continue to build on these foundational addition skills in the coming weeks.

Inquiry – Community Helpers

Our Inquiry topic this term is Community Helpers. We started by refreshing the idea of teamwork and what makes a great team. We then looked at bees as an example of an excellent team in nature. Students learned about how bees work together in a hive, and why they are important to our world.

With the help of our Year 5 buddies, we created bright and informative posters about why bees are important. It was a great way to link teamwork with our learning and showcase our creativity.
