Yard Supervision at St Gabriel’s

At St Gabriel’s, the safety and wellbeing of our children during outside play times are a top priority. To ensure this, we have a robust yard supervision plan that promotes a secure and caring environment for all children.

Our school yard is divided into three main areas:

  1. Sensory Garden: Includes the adventure playground.
  2. Big Yard: Comprises the basketball courts, bitumen area, and garden space.
  3. Little Yard: Covers the courtyard outside the Prep Hub, the area around the children’s toilets, the adventure playground, and the turf area along Spring Street.

During both recess and lunch breaks, three educators wearing high-visibility vests are on duty, each assigned to one of these areas. This structured approach allows us to maintain a safe and supportive environment where children can play, interact, and enjoy their breaks.

Active Supervision

Educators actively monitor their designated areas, offering assistance, resolving conflicts, and ensuring all children feel included and safe. If a child requires extra support, this is communicated to the entire teaching team during our weekly staff "Pitstop" meetings. This collaborative approach ensures that all staff are informed and can consistently implement strategies to address the individual needs of students.

Wellbeing and Safety Support

Key aspects of our wellbeing and safety support include:

Proactive Monitoring: Educators identify and respond to emerging needs during playtimes.

Consistent Communication: Staff systematically share information about specific student needs to ensure consistent care.

Tailored Strategies: Educators use actionable strategies to support children's emotional and physical safety.

Safe Spaces: Designated areas are available for children needing quiet, secure spaces to self-regulate or seek additional assistance. At St Gabriel’s, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for all children.
