The Foundation students have started their new knowledge unit on sustainability titled, "Taking Care of the Environment". So far students have investigated the types of rubbish in the yard and classroom and explored where this rubbish goes after the garbage truck takes it away. Landfill is a big topic of concern for our Earth so students began classifying what natural resources are.
This term in Inquiry, students will be exploring the central idea that ‘Water is a limited resource.’
Students will investigate why water is an important resource, by looking into the water cycle, developing an understanding about how water gets to our homes and how we can use water sustainably.
This week the Year 1 and 2 students began their investigation, through participating in a walk to the Maribyrnong River. They observed the different ways water can travel from one place to another, the use of water meters and water tanks, as well as the wildlife in our local area that live in and need water to survive.
We've had a wonderful and busy start to the term, with students settling in and engaging enthusiastically in their learning. Our ANZAC Day lesson and ceremony were thoughtful and respectful, providing a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the significance of the day. We've also launched our new knowledge unit on sustainability and consumption, using mentor texts like A Planet Full of Plastic and The Lorax to explore important themes and author techniques such as personification. There's a real buzz of excitement as we look ahead to swimming lessons and our first excursion of the year to CERES!
It’s been an exciting and engaging fortnight in the Grade 5/6 cohort.
We kicked off interschool sport season with a friendly match against Niddrie Primary School. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to build teamwork, show great sportsmanship, and enjoy some healthy competition. We’re looking forward to more games ahead!
Our excursion to Rosehill Secondary College was a highlight, giving students a taste of high school life. They participated in a range of engaging classes including Food Studies, Science, PE, Performing Arts, and Japanese. It was a great way to spark curiosity and begin thinking about the transition to secondary school.
In Inquiry, our focus has been on sustainability, particularly the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Students have been applying their creativity and problem-solving skills to design and build their own sustainable cities in Minecraft Education. It’s been amazing to see their thoughtful and imaginative approaches to creating eco-friendly communities.
We are gearing up for a busy season this term in the school garden.
Grade 3/4 have started out with a focus on using tools. So far we have learnt to safely use secatuers and rakes. Later in the term we are looking forward to cooking with our garden produce.
Keep an eye out at the Mothers Day Stall next week for potted succulents grown by students, and wrapped by our hardworking parent volunteers.
Plants make a great, plastic free mothers day gift!
Happy gardening everyone!
