STEM at Auburn High School

STEM life at Auburn High School is exciting. 

Application and Rotary scholarships for external STEM programs:

This term, application processes have opened to participate in THE SCIENCE EXPERIENCE program open to Year 9 and Year 10 students and the NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM Year 12 program for our current Year 11 students (closing 15 July 2024). THE SCIENCE EXPERIENCE program is run on different dates by several universities between July 2024 and January 2025. Applications are still open for the later sessions but be quick as the program is filling up fast. More information can be found at https://www.scienceexperience.com.au/about-the-program

The NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM program is a residential 9-day on-campus program where students are immersed in science and technology, and takes place at universities in Canberra or Brisbane in January 2025. Find out more at  https://www.nysf.edu.au/programs/year-12-program/

Hawthorn East’s local Rotary branch is supporting student's participation to these programs by offering a scholarship to contribute to the program fees.

Congratulations to Leo Wan Ullok, Matin Rezai, Mia Pettier (Year 9) and Thomas Nasseys (Year 10) for receiving this prestigious scholarship for THE SCIENCE EXPERIENCE program. 

Rotary scholarship applications for the NYSF Year 12 program are now open until 21 June 2026. To apply, please contact AHS STEM coordinator, Ms Wong-Fat. 

 

Science and Engineering Challenge Day on 26th June:

On the 26th of June a group of 28 Year 9 and 10 students passionate about STEM will represent the school in the Science and Engineering Challenge day organised at Deakin University. This day will be packed with hands-on activities where our students will cooperate in teams to solve problems related to the design of an earthquake proof building, the strength of a bridge, a wind turbine or the critical path in a planning schedule. Good luck to our teams in representing Auburn High School in this STEM competition.

 

Maths competitions:

  • In Mathematics, students received their certificates of achievement for the Kangourou sans Frontières Maths competition. Congratulations to all our participants for their efforts and dedication to Mathematics, with a special mention to Aarav Jain and Ryan Deetlefs (Year 7) and Minh Tran (Year 9) who received a distinction for their results. 
  • An award ceremony for the French Kangourou des Mathématiques will take place at Camberwell Primary School at the end of the term to congratulate our participants who performed in the top 30% worldwide at each year level.
  • Applications are now open to our Year 7 to 12 students to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition which will take place on 8 August. Students are encouraged to participate to stretch and challenge their skills and will have the opportunity to prepare themselves by joining our maths club or our maths channel. National Science Week:

On the week ocommecing 12th of August, we will celebrate the National Science Week at Auburn High School. This year, the theme will be about species survival and sustainability. This event is a great way to engage schools and communities to debate, explore and share experience on this important topic. To parents and guardians, if you are working in the Science field and would like to share your experience and inspire young people around this theme, we would love to have you join our school as a guest speaker during the week. Please send your expression of interest to AHS STEM coordinator, Ms Wong-Fat.
