Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) - an important message for parents (even if you’re not tech-savvy!)

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are becoming increasingly popular amongst students as a means of bypassing the school network filter system. Using a VPN to bypass network restrictions violates the AHS User Agreement.

VPNs come with issues and risks that parents should be aware of. As Ross suggested in his Principal’s Report, we’d be very grateful if you could have a conversation with your young person about the way they use their devices and how they can do so more responsibly.

We appreciate that our parent community will have different degrees of knowledge and confidence in the tech space, so here are a few salient points that might help:

What is a VPN?

A VPN is a tool that creates a secure, encrypted connection over the internet, allowing users to access websites and services as if they were connected directly to a private network. This can help in maintaining privacy by hiding the user's IP address and encrypting their online activities.

Why Students Use VPNs

Students use VPNs for various reasons, including:

  • Bypassing school network restrictions: VPNs can help students access websites and services that are blocked on school networks, such as gaming, social media or streaming sites.
  • Privacy and anonymity: Some students use VPNs to protect their personal information from being tracked or monitored online.
  • Access to restricted content: VPNs can enable students to access content that is inappropriate or restricted based on geographical location.

Other risks associated with VPNs

  1. False sense of security: Not all VPN services are trustworthy. Some free VPNs may log user data, which can then be sold to third parties.
  2. Cybersecurity threats: VPNs can expose users to malware, especially if they download a VPN from an untrusted source.
  3. Data breaches: Poorly managed VPN services may have weak security measures, leading to potential data breaches and exposure of personal information.

How to Talk to Your Child About VPNs

It's important to have an open and honest conversation with your child about the use of VPNs and their technology usage more generally. Here are some tips on how to approach the topic:

  1. Start with Education: Explain what a VPN is and why people use them.
  2. Discuss School Policies: Make sure your child understands the school's policies regarding internet use and the potential consequences of bypassing network restrictions.
  3. Emphasize Safety: Highlight the importance of online safety and the risks associated with using untrusted VPN services. Discuss the potential for malware and data breaches.
  4. Encourage Open Communication: Create an environment where your child feels comfortable discussing their online activities. Let them know they can come to you with any questions or concerns about using VPNs or anything else related to their tech usage.
  5. Suggest Alternatives: If privacy or accessing specific content is a concern, explore safer and more appropriate alternatives together. For instance, using secure and reputable services or discussing adjustments to parental controls might be viable solutions.

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has some outstanding resources for parents about all things tech-related. It’s well worth having a look at their website.

Thank you for your support in helping our young people to navigate this very important and complex space.
