Country Week

We encourage all students not attending Country Week to still attend the College in Week 11. Farm Focus students will be spending 4 out of the 5 days on the College Farm which will be a fantastic opportunity for them to complete outstanding units of competency from their Certificate II in Agriculture.

It is important to note that Year 11 Farm Focus students will soon have the opportunity to select the Certificate III in Agriculture pathway for Year 12. It is crucial that they complete their Certificate II in Agriculture qualification in 2024, as this is a prerequisite for entry into the Certificate III in Agriculture program.

Farm Semester  One Reports

Parents will soon receive Semester One reports for the Farm program. Each day students are rostered to Farm, training staff assess their attitude, behaviour and engagement, providing daily marks. These marks are averaged at the end of the semester to ensure the Semester One report accurately reflects each student. Additionally, overall progress with the Certificate II or III in Agriculture is determined by the number of units of competency achieved and/or started. Parents and students are encouraged to take time to read their Semester One report and use it to set goals for Semester Two.

Bull Semen Testing

On Thursday the 6th June 2024, Nutrien Agriculture visited the College to conduct semen testing on all beef bulls. Students actively participated in the process, gaining hands-on experience by inspecting the collected samples under a microscope. This practical session provided valuable insights into the criteria used for selecting bulls for breeding herds, enhancing student's understanding of genetic selection and herd improvement.

Drone Presentation

On Thursday 13th June, MPC visited the College to showcase the latest drone technology in agriculture. Students observed first hand as drones efficiently sprayed and fertilised the vineyard with both liquid and granular substances. The presentation was very well received, sparking excitement among students and staff about the future applications of drones in the agricultural industry and at the College.

Sheep

The Poll Merino ewes have started lambing and everything is progressing smoothly. Next week, we will begin lamb marking the Dorper and Crossbred lambs. This task will be undertaken by students who are completing their Certificate II in Agriculture, providing them with valuable hands-on experience.

Beef

Students at the College have been gaining extensive hands-on experience through the artificial insemination program. They have been learning about oestrus cycles and the benefits of synchronising oestrus, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of utilising artificial insemination over natural mating. This practical knowledge enhances their understanding of advanced breeding techniques and reproductive management in livestock.

Weekend Stock

A reminder to Year 10 and 11 students to take special note of the Weekend Stock Roster as their attendance is a requirement of their Farm learning program. Students who are wishing to swap their weekend stock duties are required to complete a Weekend Stock Duty Swap Form which is located in administration.

Please don’t hesitate to contact myself or Tony Abel (Farm Manager) if you require further information regarding the Farm Training program.
