Success - Creating it Together

Earlier in the year after the College staff spent some time reflecting on the College motto of 'Creating Success Together', I pondered what "success" meant for me. For me, I define "success" as striving to do my best work with the help of others, while surrendering to God's will and purpose for my life.

Any definition of "success" is a very personal thing, but I also think there are commonalities that thread through all of our definitions. Success is intangible; we never actually reach the point of "being a success". It is always something we are working towards, building and creating. Additionally, what is success if it doesn't involve others? The best type of success comes when we build and achieve it together. Our Secondary Years are becoming more successful as the years go by. But that also depends on what we measure that success as. Many students will say to me, "I just want to be a successful person". But what does that mean?

I think that we are successful and will continue to be successful when we are all being the best versions of ourselves as God has created us to be. So, what does that look like?

We can be the best versions of ourselves as a school community and as individuals in this community when:

  • we show kindness to people in all circumstances
  • we take responsibility for our choices and our actions, and own our part in any situation- we follow school rules and expectations so that a fair and just school can exist- we try our best and persevere when learning gets difficult
  • we help others so that they too can be successful
  • we respect other people and their property, not taking, borrowing or damaging property that is not ours to take

This passage from Philippians 3:14 is our call for achieving success:

"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
