News - from the kitchen & garden with Chris and Eve
Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday
We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.
No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.
If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)
Gardening with Eve
Unforatunately Eve was unwell on Tuesday so we didnt have our regular garden classes. But we did have our tomato stall after school selling tomato plants grown and looked after by the students
Cooking with Chris
This week in Cooking, Grade Prep and 1 made Caramelised Pumpkin, Potato and Rosemary and Margherita Mini Pizzas with a Salad of the Imagination.
From the garden we used pumpkin, oregano, rosemary, parsley and chives and silverbeet, and cos lettuce, spinach and lavender and herbs from the Hothouse.
First, in groups, we made the Pizza toppings and kneaded the pizza dough that I made in the morning.
Elio and Cooper finely chopped the rosemary and measured out the olive oil and mixed it into the sliced potatoes for the Potato and Rosemary topping.
Aly, Xavier, Luca and Nicholas chopped the oregano, chives and greens for the Tomato Sugo. Then Aly and Xavier added some water and stirred the chopped herbs and greens into the tomato sauce.
Nina and Poppie cut up the silverbeet and herbs into small pieces to add to the pumpkin for the Caramelised Pumpkin topping. They carefully stirred the greens and herbs in and cooked it until the greens had wilted and combined with the pumpkin.
Matilda and Edie made the Gluten Free Pizza dough and kneaded it well until it was smooth. (see recipe).
Phoebe and Jesse worked with Kristie to knead the pizza dough until it was smooth and soft and ready for shaping.
Cam (who is doing a volunteer universtiy placement on Tuesdays this term) turned out to be a master Pizza Maker! who has made pizzas at restaurants in Woodend and Lancefield. It was great to see his skills in dividing the pizza dough into even weight pieces by sight and feel. He then used the scales to check that each piece of dough was 100g. And they all were!
After recess, Cam demonstrated to the class how to press down on the ball of dough and roll it and turn it and roll it to form and round pizza shape. Everyone did a great job and showed their skills and patience to make a round pizza shape with their dough. They then made the circle bigger and thinner by rolling the dough from the centre out and turning the dough and rolling again until the dough was the correct size and thickness.
After everyone had rolled out their pizza dough they decided on the toppings they wanted to add for their pizza. They carefully layered the toppings and made sure they added just the right amount of each topping.
Jesse made a Caramelised Pumpkin and Cheese Pizza and a Potato and Rosemary Pizza for Kristie and they made a 2 Cheese Pizza in a heart shape for Kate. (see photos)
While the pizzas were cooking, Cam’s group made a Salad of the Imagination using leaves, greens and herbs from the Hothouse. They also added a sprinkle of lavender flowers to decorate the salad.
Elio and Nicholas and their team rinsed and stacked the dishes ready for the dishwasher.
Scout’s group wiped and cleaned the tables They worked out how many places were needed and set out the correct number of plates, and set the table with cups and jugs of water. Kristie’s group with Edie and Matilda collected flowers and herbs to decorate the table.
Great cooking Grade Prep and 1 and thanks Kristie, Cam and Scout.
