Term 4, Week 4

Hi Everyone,

Last week was such a big week and it was a week in which Ironside State School students shone!

Congratulations to Samara De Alwis, who recently competed in the Queensland State School’s Athletics Championships.  Samara placed 10th in Queensland in the 100m  -  wow!  Samara also place 5th in Queensland in the 200m  -  wow!! Samara will now be representing Queensland at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in April, 2026. Congratulations again Samara!

I was so proud watching the Rotary Junior Community Awards presentation.  Under the guidance and organisation of Mr Corbett, these students completed challenges over 2 terms and really ‘grew’ as people.  Thank you to Mrs Janelle Bodman and the entire Toowong Rotary Club; our children have thrived being part of this great initiative.

We only had 3 students who could attend that night because the other 9 were at the Band Music Fest at Iona College where they won GOLD and GOLD!!!!  WOW and WOW!!  I cannot believe I was not there but you can’t be in 2 places at once!! Congratulations to our Concert Bands and Mr James Kukulies!

Our strings groups also had their Music Fest where they received bronze, silver, silver and platinum!  These are remarkable achievements as the very wonderful Mrs Trudy Weekes has been away a lot and they have had to have a teacher fill in.  Having said that, Mrs Evelyn Legried is an amazing strings player and teacher, so they have been in very capable hands.  Congratulations to these children, Mrs Evelyn Legried and Mrs Phoebe Anderson who takes the Junior Strings.  Look at these two gorgeous kids who finally got their Strings Captain badges too  - congratulations, Theia and Jeremy have already been working hard in these roles.

I also was able to sneak in and catch one of our Year 5 debating teams who did an excellent job.   We had other teams also compete in debating in the last 2 weeks and their coach, Mr James Tait, tells me they all did a fantastic job.  Two of our year 6 debating teams remains undefeated!!

Congratulations to our week 3 Year 4-6 Merit Certificate recipients, we are very proud of you!

Our P&C Meeting is tomorrow night, please come along at 6:30pm to our staff room and support your child’s school.   Together we do great things!  Last week and this week, our staff is enjoying the expertise of Amy Green, who the P&C generously paid for.  Amy Green is working with our staff on a much-needed Wellbeing Strategy and her first presentation was brilliant.  The P&C also paid for Writer’s Toolbox which has already been successfully implemented in several classes.  We had some more professional development in writing this week through that team and it was truly outstanding. (Whilst on the subject about professional development, a delegation of our leadership team and teachers went to a PD Day on Mathematics presented by the Education Futures Institute and they said it was wonderful and they learnt so much.  Mathematics is our key focus in 2026).

For those of you who have a child heading into year 5 or 6 in 2026, please try and get along to hear all of information on Wednesday night at our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) information session.

The Silent Disco is back again but this time it is Halloween themed!  So, children in Year 1-3 can join us at 4-5pm and Year 4-6 at 5:30-6:30pm. We look forward to a great night!

Mrs Pinkerton also let us know on assembly that the Student Council is bringing back Ironside’s Got Talent this term  - yay!!  Watch this space!

We also got to congratulate two of our girls who are part of the Library monitors team and received their Library Life Member Badge  -  such impressive dedication!  You are inspiring Helen and Zahrena!

Happy World Teacher’s Day to our wonderful teachers!  I hope you have the best day!  After parents, teachers hold the most significant place in children’s lives in terms of their future and we thank each one of them for their dedication.
