Year 9 City Cite

At the end of Term 3, the Year 9 students had the wonderful opportunity of attending City Cite. This two-week program was a challenging and valuable experience for our students, developing their senses of teamwork, leadership, compassion and empathy. Students were required to navigate their way on public transport, listen and learn from guest speakers, and conduct an inquiry project about a societal issue in Melbourne. I hope, through this program, students have forged new friendships, gained a strong sense of gratitude, and learnt valuable life lessons from outside the classroom. Congratulations, Year 9s, for all you have achieved through this experience.

City Cite was a valuable experience that helped me grow both personally and practically. One of the most impactful parts of the program was visiting FareShare and seeing the incredible work volunteers do to support people going through difficult times. It showed me how much difference dedicated people can make in the lives of others, and it made me appreciate how important it is to care about those who are struggling.

One of the first things we had to get used to was travelling into the city each day. For most of us, it was the first time we were navigating public transport on our own— figuring out train lines, tram stops, and how to get around Melbourne without relying on parents or teachers to guide us. On the first two days, we travelled as a group with our teachers, which helped us build confidence. But from day three onwards, we were expected to make our way to the City Cite Building independently—either alone or with a group of friends.
It definitely wasn’t always smooth sailing. There were a few times we got on the wrong tram or missed a train we were meant to catch. But those challenges actually became really valuable lessons. We learned to problem-solve, to ask for help when we needed it, and to keep going even when things didn’t go exactly to plan. Over time, we became more confident and independent—not just in terms of getting around, but in how we handled unexpected situations.
