International Women's Day at Parliament House

Cultural Diversity Week - Harmony Day, African Drumming, End of Term celebrations

On Monday 9th March, I was blessed with the opportunity to visit the Parliament House alongside my friends and fellow leaders Madeleine, Zoe and Charlotte. The day was packed full of fun new experiences, laughs, delight and so much great advice to have taken note of.

It was my first time visiting Parliament and I must say, I was blown away! Although I had to chug the rest of my coffee before entering, since I had no idea that we weren’t allowed to bring drinks in, it was quite a sight to see!

With high ceilings and stunningly detailed decor, I wondered why I hadn’t visited the Parliament before.

The five female guest speakers - Nicole Werner MP, Professor Julianne Moss, Commissioner Jennifer Huppert, from the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Eden Foster MP each took turns speaking about their roles, how they got to where they are today and entrancing us with the best leadership advice that I’ve ever heard!

I loved sitting in the Legislative Assembly room, surrounded by passionate female students from all across Victoria, listening to empowering women steer us toward leadership and change.

I would also love to give a big thank you to Mrs Spiteri for organising and taking us there, as well as Mrs Hargreaves for dropping and picking us up from the train station.

It was truly one of my best High School experiences yet!!!

Cultural Diversity Week

Congratulations to the SRC for putting on fabulous events for Cultural Diversity Week...here is a summary of just a few...

Harmony Day

On Thursday 21st March we had our first free dress day for Harmony Day in which students dressed up in their cultural attire or a touch of orange. Through our fundraising, we chose to support the Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) which promotes better mental health for all. The foundation supports multicultural communities and new immigrants to our communities. They provide them with the resources required for a decent standard of living as well as employment and education opportunities whilst they try to settle within their new community. From our free dress day, we were able to raise $400 which will be donated to MHFA. The SRC wants to thank everyone for participating and it was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the college community’s multiculturalism.                                               - Anastasia K.

African Drumming

Today we got to experience a taste of African Culture through African Drumming with Odai and Ben. Learning about African drumming was an amazing experience and playing along with the drummers filled the auditorium with joy. Learning about drumming techniques on the Djembe such as bass, slap and tone and learning different rhythms and time signatures was a welcoming experience for all the people involved. Odai and Ben’s welcoming energy and positive vibe created an enjoyable atmosphere for all participants. Thanks to Ben and Odai for welcoming us into their amazing culture. - Louis, Jovan and Keziah

Calligraphy and Origami

Thank you to our international students and staff for running a great lunchtime activity - calligraphy and origami, both require a lot of talent!

Last day of Term - Food Trucks, Music, Games

What a fabulous lunchtime celebration the SRC organised for our students and staff today to wrap up Cultural Diversity Week and the end of Term 1.

The courtyard was a hive of activity, with food trucks, live music, games and just good fun!

Congratulations to the SRC on a successful and fabulous event.
