Beachside and SMR Swimming

On Tuesday 5th March our house swimming carnival winners enjoyed a hot day by the pool at Oakleigh Recreational Centre at the Beachside Swimming Carnival. All of our competitors gave it their best effort, even joining together for a relay event. Thank you to Riley, Ethan, Jack, Daniel, Julian, Samuel, Aidan, Lev and Harrison for taking part. Congratulations to Riley A and Daniel 'Freddie' H who came first in their events and qualified for the Southern Metro Region Carnival.

Heading back to Oakleigh on 25th March, Freddie achieved second in the Men 16-20 years 200 metre freestyle. Riley came third place in the 12-13 50 metre butterfly and the 50 metre freestyle. In my role as Co-curricular Support, it has been exciting to watch Freddie swim at Interschool carnivals. As he completes Year 12 there are now some big flippers to fill and I look forward to cheering on the up-and-coming swimmers at Cheltenham Secondary College.

Congratulations to both swimmers who are both members of the Cheltenham Swim Club. Cheltenham Swim Club offer competitive and non-competitive programs and runs from several locations, including Waves Leisure Centre.

Senior Cricket Boy's Continues

After qualifying in the SMR quarter-final, featured in our previous Cheltonian, on 7th March the team returned to Lloyd Park to face Bentleigh Secondary College in the semi-final.  After bowling out Bentleigh for 83, our opening batting pair walked to the crease with some confidence. In complete contrast to his stunning century in the previous game, Millar was caught behind in the first ball of the innings, known as a Royal Duck. In a winning team score of 104, Lachie made 48 and Charlie 46. Moving straight into the final SMR game Cheltenham put on a fantastic team effort of 153 and bowled Nossal out for 101. Owen took six wickets for the day.

Travelling all the way to Leongatha on the 18th March, Cheltenham took on Mary MacKillop College in their hometown. Losing the toss and having to bowl did not sit well with the team, Lachie's lucky coin and Charlie's coin toss were taken the blame for this. Cheltenham bowled out MacKillop for 109 and the run chase was on and not an easy one. Millar top scored with 70 which could not be achieved without the strong support at the other end. Cheltenham hit the winning runs of the State quarter-final in the last over of the day.

The Senior Boy's Cricket team are off to a State Semi Final on 15th October.

Year 8 Sport

Sport on a Friday is always a great way to end the week. Our Year 8 group had a fun day out and were successful in many sports. Owen B. made 70 runs to help our Boy's Cricket team through to the next round.

Our Boy's Tennis team will head to the Southern Metro Region later in the year.

Charli A. and Grace H. played important roles on the volleyball court and both the Girl's A team and B team won all of their games. Ms Kennedy and Ms Voullaire had a great day at the boys' and girls' volleyball and would like to thank their senior helpers Sarah, Tilly and Maddi.

Year 7 Sport

This was the first Interschool Sport adventure for our newest Cheltenham students. Unfortunately, we could not fill all of the sports but we hope our young students understand that there will be many more opportunities ahead of them.  Our Boys' Cricket team had a good day at Le Page Park and narrowly missed out on the overall win.  Boys' and girls' volleyball and tennis also filled teams and buses and they had a fun day out at sport.

Our girls' softball team had no competition to play and as a result, will go straight through to the next round.

Thank you to all of the staff and senior students who assisted during our junior sport weeks. I appreciate all of your time and effort to make sport an important part of the co-curriculum.

Year 7 boys cricket wrap-up penned by Mrs Scott

Our small team consisted of Ash M., Charlie S., Charlie H., Dylan K., Pavan M., Alex F., Levi W. and Archie W. Assisted in the lead-up by Lachie O’M. and Rudi C.. and then game day coaches Lachie M. and Mrs Scott.

Game 1

  • Charlie S. took our first wicket with a runout. Bowling was tight and runs were limited. Lotsa dots...
  • Second wicket was bowled by Alex - caught by Levi W. The team made two great runouts and we played fast enough to squeeze in 9 overs.
  • The second innings saw a great partnership between Alex and Levi making 12 and 13 runs respectively.
  • A great delivery saw the only wicket fall for Chelt bringing in Archie to meet the target runs of 33 in two balls.

Game 2

  • Chelt chose to bat first, great partnerships and two retirees (Archie and Charlie S.)
  • Pavan saw some time at the crease supported by Charlie H.
  • First wicket in the second game taken by Dylan with support by Alex, as our keeper, for a caught behind. Well done boys.
  • Second wicket run out.
  • Third wicket was a big loopy delivery from Ash saw the bails go flying.
  • Charlie S. in backward square leg caught a ball in flight, seeing the fourth out of the innings.
  • Fifth wicket was self-inflicted. Bats man had a heavy backswing, knocking his bails and sending him out.
  • The sixth wicket taken was by Pavan in his first over - and was assisted by Charlie S. and Alex as keeper for a runout.
  • Another successful game for the Chelt boys.

Game 3

  • For our third and final game we were up against the other team with two wins under their belt. Unfortunately, their bowling was fast and in line and kept the Chelt boys with little opportunity for runs. At the end of our innings, the opposition was only chasing 33.  While our bowling was great, Port Melbourne was better.

Overall, we had a great day, the weather was perfect and as Meatloaf said, two out of three ain't bad

Well done Year 7!

Senior Lawn Bowls SMR

Chole, Max and Marc made their way to Hampton Bowls Club on Friday 22nd March. They took up the challenge of the SMR finals and came runners-up. Fabulous effort!

Darcy R. Cricket update

Following up on Year 12 student, Darcy R's summer of cricket as reported in Issue 1, Term 1 of The Cheltonian, on the 11th March, Darcy competed (as a bottom aged player) in the U18 women's premier league grand final for Melbourne Cricket Club against Carlton. This is considered the most prestigious cricket competition for Darcy's age group.

She was brought onto bowl late in the 50 over innings when two of Carlton’s strongest batters had settled into a 75 run partnership. Darcy took on her role as strike bowler and stirred things up - and those wickets fell over the next four overs before an ultimate very quick collapse.

Melbourne batted through to the win within 38 overs.

A massive congratulations to Darcy and the team!
